Mac heats up excessively , fans rev when under load

This Mac has been purchased to run music editing programs such as Reaper, Cubase/Steinberg etc, but is seems to be barely able to handle it even with its 16Gb RAM and quad processor. It bogs down, gets hot, the fans rev high , battery capacity is diminished. I had cleaned the dust out of the cooling system already, now I am thinking of replacing the thermal paste as well. I am just wondering if there are other known causes or issues with this model, perhaps I could get a heads up from the gurus? Thank you all for being so helpful, much appreciated.

I would monitor the thermals with a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro see if the drive is running hot as well as look at the exhaust temp Vs the CPU temps what is the delta difference? Should be around to 10-12º C, if more the heatsink its self has failed. Inspect for white power on the heat pipe and/or staining on the logic board around it.

To test the heat sink alone you’ll need a good scientific weight scale to weigh the good vs one in question. The bad one will be the lighter weight.

The other area that is a common is a loaded up SSD! Either clean off at least 1/4 of the drive or get a larger drive internally or as a cheaper option, get an external drive to hold the library content.

The internal boot drive should have as little on it as you get away with. As music or video editing software needs lots of space!
