Changed Battery and Charging Port, Can't Speak During Phone Calls

As title states, I replaced the battery and charging port in my HTC One M8. Everything works with the phone regarding charging, headphones, speakers, internet, sending and receiving calls.

When I do send or receive a call I can hear whoever is speaking, but they can’t hear me. I’m afraid that one of the cables or connectors were damaged during the tape removal process in getting the motherboard removed.

I’d appreciate any help.

Hi @aegis31337 ,

According to Step.17 of the HTC One (M8) Teardown guide, the microphone shares the same cable as the headphone socket and the micro USB port.

You may have to check if the cable is connected properly

Also I can’t see it too well but I’m wondering if the microphone is mounted on the board next to the USB port and if it is still there or if it is faulty. Worth a look perhaps.

Looking at this video of a microphone repair for the phone, the whole board is just being replaced. View from about 19:15 minutes into the video.

Thank you for all the information. Hopefully I just need to reconnect the cable, because I just got a new board. Not looking forward to prying this thing open again, but here goes nothing.

@aegis31337 ,

Just had a thought, did you try making a call in speakerphone mode and check if that works OK or use headphones with a microphone attachment? Not quite sure if you meant that you did.

If it also doesn't work try starting the phone in safe mode and check.

If it works OK then a downloaded app is the problem. The trick is to find out which one.

Given that the headphones work as does the charge port hopefully it may mean that the cable is not fully inserted or connected properly and not that there is a problem with the microphone.

Try cleaning the cable end with a clean eraser if you haven't got Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (or even rubbing alcohol - check the label to make sure it is IPA) just in case you accidentally handled the cable end with your fingers which may have caused a bad connection. ( perspiration etc on cable end contacts, not implying anything ;-)

Good luck

I could very well have gotten my greasy fingers on the cable. I neglected to wear gloves while I was working on the phone. I think we have some Isopropyl Alcohol, but it's only 50%, the stronger stuff already got used for do it yourself hand sanitizer.

@aegis31337 ,

Anything is better than nothing.

Clean it using the 50% IPA first to get any impediments off and then use a clean, dry, lint free cloth to gently wipe it clean again and you should be good to go.

If you have head phones it will work, I would recommend air pods.

I suppose that would work, but I'd really like to be able to use the phone properly.
