Problem while replacing SSD on MacBook Air 11

Hello,

I bought a Trascend Jet Drive SSD and have been trying to do a backup copy onto it in order to replace my current SSD with it. I’ve tried following the instructions of the manufacturer, which tells you to use Disk utility to back up, but I keep getting “input/output error” and no back up is made. I have been trying to search for a solution but only found that FileVault should be disabled, which it already was. Is there any other way to do this?

My computer is a MacBook Air 11” mid-2011 version 10.11.6.

I appreciate any ideas :) !

I think you really need to use a different approach than using Disk Utilities imaging service. How about using the Apple Migration service instead. Here you’ll first need to have a bootable external drive running the OS you are currently using. Run the installer and at the end you’ll be greated with the question if you want to migrate your user accounts, apps & data from another system you will want to do this to copy off your stuff to the external drive. Once you’ve done that after you reboot your external drive should be the booting drive. Check your apps and data if everything looks OK, swap out your internal drives and redo the same process. That should do it.

You can't Device is mounted and in use, disk utility is too limited for this easy task. You can clone it with a external bootable macOS.

Easy and free way on your existing macOs is Carbon Copy Cloner (Google It) easy 2 clicks full copy or your macOS.

FYI - The imaging service within Disk Utility (older versions of OS-X & macOS) is just like Carbon Copy Cloner. So in this case a bad drive can't be cloned as the corruption won't allow it. I also find too many failures with cloning apps (any) and have long since stopped using them.
