Can you give us more information? What speed is it? Did you do anything before it stopped booting? Can you boot off a CD?

I'd check to make sure it's not the LCD by booting the iMac connected to an external display. If you get nothing on the external then you can rule out the LCD and see if its a logic board or video ram issue.

UPDATE:

If you're not getting video on an external display this starts pointing fingers at the logic board, or possible fans and sensors. My 24" iMac crashed about 4 months after purchase and then would hang on boot, turned out to be the fans and temp sensors.

If you have applecare take it in.

If you have another mac, try booting your imac while holding T to boot in target disk mode. and connect via firewire to another mac, if it works you can backup your files before sending it to apple,

apple doesn't really guarantee your data if you take it in under warranty.

Interesting problem... Without more information it will be hard to diagnose. Based on what you have said though, it could be that your power supply isn't supplying enough power to the computer to start everything up. I hate to say it, but if it's not that, you probably have a bad logic board.

You could try clearing the parameter ram.

Hold down Command + option + p + r and power the system on. Keep holding until it resets again.

This just resets the hardware and reinitializes everything so its fresh.

Does it chime? Or you just hear the CD drive spin before it quits? If no chime, not much else is going to happen in terms of resetting PRAM as others suggested. If it was a G5 model I'd holler about the capacitors (LB or PS.)

No Chime I think it is the Logic Board or power supply. Thank you for your help

Do you get any POST indication? IOW when it won't start up, does the power light do any repetitive blinking?

Since you've opened it up, can you attempt booting it while it's open? Older iMacs had some diagnostic lights inside on the logic board.

I am having the same problem with my 24" iMac. The LCD is black. Maybe replacing the io board will work for me also.
