Ticking Noise from power supply even when iMac is not switched on?

My 27” iMac Mid 2011 power supply makes a constant electrical clicking/ticking noise when the machine is on standby ie. power cable in, but imac not powered on.

I have replaced the PSU with another pre-owned one, which basically does the same thing. Is this normal or have I got two dodgy power supply’s?

When you say the machine is on standby, do mean it is asleep?

Sorry, No I mean when the iMac is shut down and the power cord is connected and the plug socket is switched on.

I have the same problem. The imac does not always turn on. I also have the ticking sound (very soft). With the imac turned off and the powercord attached, it makes an ticking sound (PSU area).

It does sound like a difficult problem to isolate after trying a second power supply.

A clicking sound could come from a few places. You’ll need to start at the power source your AC outlet first.

An outlet that is old or loose could be loosing electrical contact with the cord. So as your room heats up and cools the connection breaks and reconnects.

I would also make sure the outlet its self is properly wired as well using a outlet tester like this one GFCI Outlet Tester 48-250V You also might want to talk with your power provider to see if they can place a power meter at your house to monitor the power over a period of time if the ticking noise is not consistent.

Replace your surge protector or better yet get a UPS.

If the outlet looks good try using a different power cord.

See if diagnostics picks up something restart your system press the D key to get in from a USB wired keyboard.

Thank you Dan, appreciate the advice. The clicking is constant, and I have tried moving the iMac to different outlets and using different power cords aswell, but the issue remains:( I have thought about ordering a brand new PSU but after sinking £60 into a pre owned PSU with the same problem I’m reluctant to spend any more.

@ryzaswag - I still have a '11 27" my self its still a great system! Are you near Liverpool? If you are, give these folks a try TheBookYard see what they say.

Did diagnostics pass?

They are a great system indeed, I recently upgraded from a late 2009 with an SSD and maxed out RAM but it just didn’t have the processing power so I bought a 2011 27” and even got a bit carried away and ordered 32gb RAM and a 1TB SSD. Was very excited to start using it then I noticed this clicking noise:( going to run diagnostics again as I had ran it before and it picked up nothing, hopefully it gives some insight!

By Apples specs, this system is limited to 16 GB. Try taking out some of the RAM. See if that makes a difference.
