Why is agitator barely moving?

Older Whirlpool top-loading washing machine, model LA9500XTNO. Agitator barely moves at all during wash cycle and not at all during rinse cycle. Lid switch is fine. Drive coupling is also fine. Replaced agitator dogs as they were worn, but that did not resolve the issue. Drains fine and no strange noises coming from the motor or the machine as it goes through the cycles.

Motor Coupling

The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. If the washer is overloaded, the motor coupling will fail in order to protect both the motor and transmission. The motor coupling can also fail due to normal wear. Inspect the motor coupling to determine if it is broken. If the motor coupling is broken, replace it.

Drive Motor

The drive motor might be defective. However, the drive motor is rarely at fault for this symptom. Before replacing the drive motor, first check all of the more commonly defective washer components. If none of those components are defective, consider replacing the drive motor. To determine if the drive motor is defective, first ensure that the motor is getting power. If the drive motor hums but doesn’t run, is noisy, or does not turn freely, replace it.

Lower Agitator

The lower agitator might be damaged or stripped away where it connects to the drive system inside. To determine if the lower agitator is stripped inside remove it from the washer and inspect for damage or wear.

Upper Agitator

The upper agitator might be damaged or stripped out at the lower agitator connection point. Inspect the agitator for damage or wear around the connection point.

After looking all over the internet to find the cause of why my agitator isnt spinning, your answer about the stripped lower agitator really helped and solved the problem. Thank you.

I'd say after checking all those it could be possible that the motor has slipped in it's bracket or the belt is wore. I'd check to c if the motor bracket has moved or readjust the tension on the on the motor mount to the or just replace the belt itself. I hope his or my answer works for you.

I don’t know if this we’ll get answered. However, I have an older model top loader washing machine that I just replaced the dogs in and I put her back together and the thing isn’t agitating like it did before I replaced those dogs. My clothes aren’t clean and I actually can’t look in because my door lock is actually under the top! It’s a nice washer that’s done me wonders, however I have been hearing a bit of a humming when it first started. But she still spins and times and goes through every cycle except that darn agitation! The top barely moves so I can’t imagine what the bottom is doing! But I’ve say I stuck my arms in the there and took the bottom agitator and moved it myself and it felt free. So I’m lost. Please please help me. I hope it’s not the motor!
