ESD is tricky!

The concept is to bring all of the items touched at the ‘same charge potential’ as the system. But what is the ‘charge potential’?? This is the static charge built up within the tools, parts and you!

OK, what to do??

First you should have an ESD mat and the mat needs to be connected to a ground point. Often the electrical outlets ground pin or a metal water pipe that exits the building. Then you can attach your wrist strap to the mat and have all of your tools and parts on the mat with your system. As long as the metal case is touching the mat you’re set!

But I’m only putting in RAM or replacing my drive do I need to go this far??

On the most part you can get away without the mat but you do need to be careful! This gets into first touching all of the pieces and the system so the charge in all of them is the same. Then clipping the strap onto the case while you work. And lastly, finish before moving about!

In any case if you pull the logic board you want the mat!

On a ground. Back in pc days we would connect a power supply in power, put in in off position, and connect in the metal. Please dont do this in the mac. It is unmasked
