GBA SP resets when doing random saves

I’ve been playing Pokemon LeafGreen and FireRed (authentic cartridges) on my GBA SP AGS-001, but sometimes when I save on them, my SP resets to the “GameBoy” screen, corrupting my save data (good thing they utilize backup). However, some saves go through successfully.

Because I’ve been successfully saving on these games every time on my GBA (non-SP), I’m inferring that there’s something up with the SP rather than the cartridges. Anyone know what’s up with this? The switch works perfectly, so I don’t think thats the problem. This SP is a Japanese model so maybe this could be why? A user on another forum thinks it has to do with power usage as “saving” uses up more battery. Thanks
