Stripped screws on WIFI card

Hi,

Was hoping to replace/update WIFI card of my Mac Pro Early 2008 (3,1). Screws were to tight and managed to strip both screws holding (original) card in place….

Block Image

Tried the rubber band method, Gorilla Glue (it won’t stick) all with no luck… need to remove screws. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

JT

They make a tool to back out striped screws without cutting the heads off. Ask your local hardware store person.

Awesome! Will definitely ask. I did order a a set of PZ-57 pliers and was going to give that a try but the more options the better off I am! Thanks again!

At this point you don’t have many options ;-{

I would seal up the area with masking tape and news paper so the metal shavings don’t get down on to the logic board. Using a Dremel tool at a low RPM I would use a thin grinding wheel to cut a slot across the head of the screw.

But! Before I would even try turning the screws

I would heat up the screw as hot as I could get it without damaging the parts around. This would require first taking the masking tape and anything flammable away and then masking the area again with Kapton tape I would use focused heated air by using a small Precision Butane Torch then I would use a short quirt of freeze spray on the head to cool it so the screw would be shocked breaking the seal to the stud (thermal expansion and contraction).

Using a flat screw tip, the finest one, hold it striaght at the screw and give some solid taps so it makes an indent on the shape of the flathead then screw it out.
