exact same issue, dyson a completely useless in customer services

I have the 7 sent all day silicone spray etc then took out the three screws holding the battery, lid popped open, it was over filled won't do that agin

Had the same problem, spoke with Dyson customer support & they solved the problem.

I was firstly asked to try & release the RED catch at the base of the handle - the one which keeps the canister door closed & locked.

Then when that didn’t work, I wasted to remove the battery unit ( held in with 3 tiny Phillips screws).

Then was asked to repeat the same “release RED catch”. With some physical persuasion the canister door opened and all the contents spilled out onto the floor. What a mess, but that at least allowed me to pull up the top lever and separate the top cyclone from the canister.

Cleaned everything and put it all back together - in reverse order.

Hey presto - that worked, for me.

Good luck

So I had the same problem, cylinder wouldn't open to empty bin, and the thing was just jammed. Would not go in or out, just stuck in the middle. Here's how I fixed mine. Hope it helps. See photos

Yes, this worked for me. I found it helpful to remove the battery first (two screws are in view in image 1, the other is on the handle, sort of on the other side of the handle from the trigger). Then it still required some jiggling and the trash release was still hard to pull, but it came out.

I was scared of breaking the little bits of plastic. It’s stronger than it looks. This is my second generation dyson stick cordless. I’ve had it a few years now and didn’t even know the drum came off. Great post Joanne Lynn-Williams

Your pictures were very helpful thanks, so that I could see the detail of what the mechanism SHOULD look like. However my problem was a little different. The door would not open because that little grey cam at the top of the latch slider bar was not screwed on and we saw this strange little piece fall out as soon as we first got the dust bin moving. No spring, and no screw holding it on. Manufacturing error. Outcome - entire dust bin part will need replacing, or since this thing is just 2 days old, the retailer will need to replace the whole unit and deal with Dyson.

Of course now I can see that I can release the latch myself by just grasping the latch bar and sliding it down against the clip to make the door pop open - which it does. Still, for want of one screw and one spring, ridiculously, back it must go to drive our stupid waste chain.

I successfully released my bin, thanks to your images and comments. Im now waiting for everything to be bone dry before trying to put it back together again.

Thanks a bunch for that post. The small, clear release did the trick. The last I looked, the hand-held Dyson's were going for $538. Strong work, Joanne-Lynne. A lot of credit for figuring that out.

Look for any dirt or debris along the track and follow this guide, this could simply need a bit of force.

Thank you so much for sharing these instructions! I followed them and was able to open the bin. Now it works! I was afraid I would break it by pulling the red “open bin” tab with force but I didn’t. Thanks again! Saved me from having to buy a new one.

You would have to “unlatch” the back portion of the bin. Try the tiny red latch first, if that doesn’t work get a tiny little screw driver like for eyeglasses and release the tiny clear latch. Once you clean it out you should then be able to release the bin as usual.

I hit it with WD40, the a heat gun. Used a screw driver and SMALL hammer to tap the thumb tag. It opened then washed and cleaned which seem to rinse the dirt out of the channels on the little red slider gizzy. Do be careful not to cause a fire with the WD40 and heat gun. It didn’t take too much heat to loosen.

Update (01/15/2022)

I hit it with WD40 and a heat gun. The used a small hammer and screw driver to tap the thumb notch down. It worked fine. Rinsed entre unit and whatever gunk was in the little channels came free. Didn’t take a lot of heat, but the heat did the trick. Don’t set fire to the WD40.

The part is no longer available from Dyson. 924366-01. They had it at $40, it's on ebay for about the same if you don't have a heat gun.

I can’t open the dirt cylinder

Just fixed mine. Remove the two screws from the underneath of the battery pack. Take off the battery. Now release the Bin canister. Squirt some WD 40 on the red sliding mechanism. There you have it.

In my case, the rotating cam and spring that push down the red rod that unclips and opens the bottom were GONE. The plastic screw pivot mount that the cam rotated on was BROKEN down to a nub, no way to screw a new cam and spring in, even if just that part was available, which it isn't.

So, the options were to get a new motor and housing assembly, which is MAIN BODY AND MOTOR, PART # 967812-01, and that part goes for around $100 on eBay.

Instead, I unmounted the clear bin and the top assembly, as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R77Ne2A...

Then I drilled a 1/2" hole in the base unit, right where the cam pivot mount screw post used to be. That gave me access to the red rod, to push it down and unlatch the bin bottom. However, 1 hole wasn't quite enough, so I drilled another 1/2 inch overlapping hole right below the first hole. NOW there was room to use my finger to push down that rod to unclip the bin bottom. I put it all back together... It works! Just use a finger to push down that red rod and the bottom pops open! Ghetto, sure, but solves the problem.
