My home central air conditioner works fine till it reaches lower temperature setting then it shuts off and doesn't come back on even after the temperature rises. Turning it on and off does not help. It is not freezing up on the outside. I have to completely shut it down for an hour sometimes two and then it will turn back on. A fresh filter has been installed.

Richard it sounds to me as if it might be the control board. A component is changing values in use and has to be shutdown to reset. My suggestion would be to see if you can find a bad unit somewhere and retrieve the control board for free or at least reasonably priced. (preferably with a return option)

Well I'm going to have to do some studying and research on this. Thanks for giving me a starting place. It's supposed to get 104 here today. Hope it will come back on quickly.
Another possibility might be the thermostat. there is a connection that applies a ground to start things--you could try jumping that.
Please make sure the dog has lots of water---you too.
The air conditioner man did not show up. Unit went off at ten this morning and started working again at ten tonight. Guess it doesn't like to work in the heat of the day
What I do is to get up about 4 in the morning before the air conditioner has reached the low temperature shut off point and turn it off. I wait till it gets to 76 after I get up and turn it on. This has worked every day except one that I missed turning it off, that day it wouldn't come back on till 6:00 PM and 85 degrees. Will wait for the heat wave to end and try the air conditioner man again. I'm scared to mess with it right now as I don't want to lose it all together.
