when you say that the ipod works fine when hooked up to a dock, does that mean your volume bar shows up? What firmware ver is it? Does unplugging your ipod from the dock and unplugging the headphone make a difference? Have you tried a reset? First off, back up your ipod....

Apparently there is a bug in the first generation iPod Touch (1G) with Apple’s OS 3.0 installed. Users are unable to change the volume using the usual double-tap of the home key.I guess what happened is that the assumption is made that the iPod has a volume switch and since the headphones are not plugged in , it must be connected to a dock. So make sure that you have proper headphones, since some of them can cause your volume bar to not reappear. So you could try to reconnect with new/different headphones or speakers, and see if the controls will show up. You could also try to restore your iPod with a different firmware, however, that will erase your data. There could also be issues with the audio jack. Let us know how it is going. Good Luck.

thank you all for your advise and opionions

I just got the ipod so it is "clean"(no info on it) i did an update in it and it is running 3.1.3, also did a restore, i have the original headphones(i think), have also tried others to no avail, not sure how to restore with "other" firmware other than what itunes supplies, i am getting sound out of jack and looks like headset goes in all the way and properly.

kevin, Check here for older and different iPod Touch firmware. It also tells you on top of that page how to do it. It might just be working for you.

por

ok i can figure all that out BUT not sure what file i should be adding the .ipsw to

por

The .ipsw is your firmware ;-) save it in a directory that you can remember and do a restore with itunes you can shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the Restore or Update buttons in iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the downloaded ipsw-file.

por

lol i realize that it is my firmware, every "file" i downloaded from the site has more than 1 file in the folder, none are labeled "firmware", so i am not sure which one i am suposed to be putting on.

I found this on another site and it should fix the problem

"....I also have the 1st generation ipod and was also missing the volume slider. Here are the things I did to get it to work again....

1. Power off

2. Power on holding the power and sleep buttons until I saw the apple symbol.

3. Unplugged and plugged back in my headphones.

4. Slider appears only when headphones are plugged in....."

Worked like a charm. Literally - plug the earphone into the jack. Turn the iTouch off using the sleep wake button (i.e hold until you get a red slider) and THEN when you turn it back on, WHILE the apple symbol is still showing, unplug the earphones and put them back IMMEDIATELY (Apple still showing). I heard a noticeable difference in sound as soon as I did this - and when the iTouch finished rebooting I went to music and there was the slider and the volume was back to normal! :-)

Most likely, there is dust/debris in the dock connector. To clean the dock connector, use a toothbrush, and carefully "scrub" the connector. I've also seen this problem being solved by just restarting the iPod.

There are no external speakers on the 1st generation iPod touch. You can only use it with headphones or a dock speaker.

i have same problem with my ipod touch 1 , and i found it . mostly i think only problem on plug of the headphone :

to resolved it

1. unplugged headphone first, and play music like usually.

2. plugged back in headphones "slowly" and move to right, left, up and down until volume control bar exist again, or you cant fix the jack of the headphone to apple :)
