My Brother printer is always jamming in duplex mode

Single sided printing works fine but duplex is always jamming. I clear the duplex tray but it just jams again. I own a Brother MFC-8910DW. It’s about two years old and has been a great printer. Until now!

I have the same problem!! have you fixed it? if so please tell us how you did it

mine always jams whenever it tries to print two sided, at first it would print two papers instead of one but now it completely jams.

I have the same problem with a Lexmark. Instead of sucking the paper back in to print the 2nd side, it spits it all the way into the output tray, and then complains that there’s a jam.

I had the same problem. I blew the dust out of the printer, cleaned the rollers, and checked for updates....still would jam in duplex mode. I finally got a bright flashlight and watched the paper through the crack between the back cover and case and discovered the paper was getting stuck under the paper tray. I turned the printer on its front and discovered there was a partial sheet of paper stuck in the paper path. It was difficult to get to but when I removed it, the printer started working correctly again in duplex mode. Hope this helps some of you with the same problem.

@Todd Neis Thanks for letting the world know what worked for you. I looked as you described, but did not find any paper. My paper is getting stuck much higher up in the path, just above the part that folds down to print envelopes with the new version of the software.

If a paper jam resulted in a torn sheet, or you tore a jammed sheet getting it out then there could be a scrap of paper in there somewhere, or even some other foreign object. You may have to look very hard to ensure the paper path really is clear. Use a torch and maybe a dentst’s mirror to see right inside.

In so far as you can, clean all paper guides and rollers with isopropyl alcohol. Inspect everything very carefully - it could be that some small plastic part has got broken. Look for anything that looks different of the right and left hand sides.

Paper quality is important in avoiding jams. Make sure you’re using good quality paper, and that it’s bone dry. Any moisture it might have picked up will make it prone to jamming.

Thank you. I will give that a try.

OMG thank you

Isopropyl alcohol worked for me. Cleaned every roller I could find with damp microfiber cloth (one part of it soaked in alcohol that was then dabbed dry so it was not dripping wet).

Try looking at the bottom too. A torn sheet got stuck in the duplex paper reservoir. Flashlight helped find it because paper reflects a lot brighter than printer internals.

I had the problem printing on duplex and was able to fix it. I found a piece of paper jammed in the back and a piece of paper jammed under the lower paper tray under the rollers. Works fine now.

You can easily remove the paper from the printer by using some basic guidelines, all you have to do is follow the steps given below.

1.       Whenever you get an broken paper as an output or it is stucked in the printer, you need to switch off the printer and let the machine cool for a while.

2.       Open the printer’s front panel and remove the toner from your printer.

3.       Now remove the printer header from your device, and remove the paper, if available inside the machine.

4.       Now you need to open the back panel, and remove the paper from their as well.

5.       Finally, you need to close the front panel, back panel and header.

Hope this will help you in fixing the brother printer paper jam error.

Brother MFC-L2700 printer series.

My printer was jamming on double-sided printing, but NOT single-sided printing.
When the paper makes the 2nd pass back into the printer, my dual white rollers were misaligned with the black rubber rollers. This caused the paper to jam and wrinkle in 2-sided mode.
You can release this unit using the GREEN tabs, and adjust it horizontally so that all 4 sets of rollers align.
After I re-aligned the rollers, it would print 2-sided without any jams or paper wrinkles.

P.S. Also, be sure to avoid heavy paper; this jams more frequently. 20-pound paper is standard.

Thank you so much! I have a printer of the Brother HL-L2370 series where the dual sided papers didn't go back all the way, and your answer solved it.

This seemed to start just after a firmware update. I assumed it would be fixed quickly with the next version, but it has not. That the firmware is the issue is supported by the fact we have two different models of printers.

I only have a small personal use Brother printer, but I have noticed that it “jams” a lot when I print duplex too. The thing is with mine, it is not actually jamming. This happens to me when I print something duplex that only needs to print one side. The printer seems to want to suck the paper back in and flip it as if to print the other side even if there is nothing to print there, so if I take the sheet out when the first side is done printing but before it has a chance to suck it back in and flip it, it reads a false paper jam. The only thing I have to do is hit the X on the control panel and everything goes back to normal. I apologize if this is not applicable to your specific printer, but I thought there was a chance it may be a similar programming issue and not a physical jam after all.

Had same issue, the problem was, that a spring at the back cover went out of place and the paper guide was not working properly. After putting it back into place no jam error anymore.

I had a piece of paper wind up on the black roller. I had no idea it was there cause the printer still worked but eventually it was discovered. When cleaning it out I believe the spring on the paper guide came out. How did you get your spring back in?

Has anyone tried “rubber rejuvenator” on the rollers? I have 2 brother printers and both have this problem and it seems to be a 2-3 year age thing. Just wondering because I can’t think of anything else to rejuvenate with the $12 bottle.

An issue with constant paper jam error during duplex printing with no real jam could be cause by misplaced spring in the back cover of the paper feed system, because the paper guide is misaligned. This prevent the paper to go back to be printed on the other side and printer stops and shows the error. After putting the spring in place, now it prints in duplex without issues. (My printer is Brother MFC-9332CDW)

OMG thank you for this comment! This is EXACTLY what was wrong with my Brother MFC-9330CDW printer! Every time I tried to print double sided the paper would not go back through the rollers completely. I checked the spring under the back cover like you mentioned and it was out of place. Put it back and now it works! Thanks again!!

I have a Brother 2270DW printer and was getting duplex errors like “duplex disabled”.

I found the duplex tray was totally inserted but the little actuator was bent on the right side looking from the rear of the machine. You can’t miss it once you look for it. There is a blue and red wire that go to the duplex tray switch. This switch has a function of making sure you have the duplex tray inserted fully. However, I took the side off to get a better look and discovered the switch was physically broken. It could not do what it needed to do. Since I had no spare switch and doubt I would ever find one, I pulled both wires off the switch, stripped about 1/4 inch and twisted them together. Then I put black electrical tape on the twisted bare wire connection and carefully found an area to tuck it into. I put all covers back on and now duplex works fine. Took me all afternoon to figure it out. Hope this will help someone else.

None of the suggested above worked for my HL-3770DW printer. Finally as I was watching the paper come out for the first page, it was moving to the left. Then it was no longer lined up and would not feed back for the next page. It turns out that the right black flap on the top at the back that the paper pushes up as it comes out was sticking just enough to hold the paper back an push it to the left. Once it prints a page successfully, it does for all the following. It only happens on the first page after I have not printed for a day or maybe a few hours. So now I just flip up the right flap before any duplex printing. Then it will not stick until it sits for a time. If it did fail on the first page, I still had to open the back to reset it.

Does this usually require a replacement of the fuser unit?
