Screen issues, Back light dims & goes out

I have a 2016 macbook touchbar 13" and one month after the 1 year warranty I noticed this "stage lights" issue. 5 months later the issue is worse now.

Yesterday, I noticed that when I tilt the screen back beyond the 90 degree angle the screen goes black. Then if I move it back to 90 degrees it gets illuminated. But the angles vary a lot. Sometimes it gets illuminated only If I move it back to 60 degrees and sometimes a little more than 90 degrees.

One important thing to mention: when I open the lid until 60 degree there's no stage light issue, the display is clean, with no shadows. The issue starts at 60 degree with the shadows appearing and screen brightness being lowered until it goes black.

It works perfectly with an external monitor. So it must be something with a damaged display cable, right? Can it get worse than it already is, like damaging the logic board or something?

I can't afford an expensive repair (new display) so if I'm safe keeping the lid closed, I'm planning to use it as a desktop.

Me too. I opened a thread at Apple

https://discussions.apple.com/message/33...

- de

apple closed the tread :(

- de

I’ve started a petition on change.org (https://www.change.org/p/apple-fix-all-n...).

Please sign in, together we can make Apple run an extended warranty program.

- de

Same problem here. I called Apple, they don’t want to cover the costs. I have an model MacBook Pro touchbar 2016 with a lot of extras. Very disappointed…

- de

I have the same thing with my 2016 MacBook pro, you can check out my post earlier. You will need to push hard and upwards as many have recommended. Unless every case was voiced to upper, Apple will not take action. Even if Apple puts this display problem into a quality program in the next few years, you will still be refunded for all the repair expenses later. Every case counts.

Apple appears to have a run of displays failing in the new 2016/17 models!

Sadly, the cable between the backlight within the display and the connection to the logic board is the issue here. The flexing of the display (opening & closing the lid) fatigues the wires within the ribbon cable. The complete lid needs to be swapped out.

Apple will likely issue an extended warranty for this (free repair). I would still make the effort to visit an Apple Store so its on record if you can't afford the repair now. They may even just repair it under warranty!

Here's a bit more: Verdict on the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro – Apple’s Shiny New Toy Crippled By Serious Flaws

Quote: "Here at Mac Plus, we are seeing an increasing number of MacBook Pro 2016 – 2017 coming in for repairs for LCD backlight issues, LCD sudden death, keyboard issues as well as logic board failures. Most of these Macbook Pro are less than half a year out of warranty. For the past 4 months, we had nearly 10 customers enquiry about LCD and keyboard issues.

One typical issue that the new MacBook Pro has is with the backlight and display showing “spotlight” effects at the bottom of the LCD."

- de

Thanks for your comment, Dan. Do you think this issue can get worse than it already is, like damaging the logic board or something?

I'm planning to use it as a desktop with the lid closed connected to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse until I can take it to an Apple Store.

- de

Leaving it closed should help.

But! You really need to visit an Apple Store to get your problem known! Besides, theres also a good chance Apple will replace your display so you'll get the full operation back under extended warranty. Apple will likely rebate the cost once the extended program starts.

Procrastination will do you in! Don't!

- de

@efries - Apple killed your thread! Guess they want to hide it.

I have the same display problem for my 13” Macbook pro that I bought in late 2016. I agree with all the comments state that this is clearly a product defect and degradation of Apple products. I already went to Brea Mall Apple store and tried to find out what happened, the only solution I got is to pay $400 for replacing a new display if your warranty is out. The thing is even though I am seeing enough reports online, Apple repair team did not see enough data to recognize this is a known issue that they should acknowledge and do something about it. I urge everyone who run into the problem go to Apple support site and log a ticket. I am in the process of escalating it upward and hoping to get a more satisfying resolution by talking to the senior product support staff and customer relation.

Any news on this?

I am having this exact same issue and it only started about 3 months after my warranty period ended.

I brought it in to an Apple Store in Turin, Italy, where I am currently living and they said I’d have to pay for the repair. I then found out about this issue being quite widespread so I complained to the Apple support chat folks and they directed me to a senior phone advisor who said the same thing Pay for it!

Now I’ve scheduled another meeting at the Apple Store again and I will ask to see a manager... Any tips on how to take this further up the food chain so that I can get an exception/push for a repair program like with the keyboards?

- de

@diegoaparra30, first I am sorry to see another same case , Apple Store again continued to ask its customer to pay for the repair even though it is very obvious that it is a defective component.

Long story short, I too talked to a senior staff from the support team but got no help. I continued to reach out to customer relation, after an hour long heated discussion, she finally agreed to repair my display for free. Yet, the Apple Store did not agree to the decision, I had to pick up my laptop from the Apple Store and decline the repair first.

The Apple customer relation person then ordered me a repair box to ship my laptop in for depot repair. The depot repair was known to be a cheaper way for fixing device issues.

After that, my problem was fixed within 3 days and shipped right back to me with no charge on my side. I’m happy with the result but it is sad to see Apple continue to treat it’s customers badly especially in situation as this.

Given many similar cases spreading globally, I am sure it is a defective product issue, Apple still refuses to look into it and continues to ask victims to pay for the expensive repair.

It might need another class of action to put this issue into a quality program.

- de

same issue on my Macbook Pro 13" (2016). would you know if they replaced the whole display system or just the cables?

- de

They are replacing the display assembly as unlike the older models the cables are soldered directly on the display and go to a second logic board (T-CON) with is held just above the main logic board. Take a look at this image T-CON & logic board. If you look at the top you'll see to clips which hold the four cables from the lid on the T-COM board. The 3rd cable from the left is the backlight cable.

- de

Thanks Dan! Looks like i got to spend more coz of this hardware config

Did Apple cover the replacement screen ?

No, they didn't. I was in school and needed to use the computer so I changed it ASAP. The repair officer only showed me the available programs which didn't include screen replacement. However, they did admit the model was very problematic

- de

how much you were charged for the new screen and labor.

About 450ish, 400 for the screen and 50 for labor.

FYI: Apple repaired our 2016 MacBook Pro  (MacbookPro13,1) at no cost.

Apple published a service repair fix on 5May19:

https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macboo...

Note: the repair part was p/n:  605-20954 - Display Assembly, Silver

I went to an Apple store and rep initially said repair was not covered. I showed him the above link, then he said .....I did not know about this - this was new info - he did not know about this repair service program.

Check to see if your model is included.

I got the same issue, first back light was so bright, brought it to Apple store, they said it needed to get it replaced around $ 800. A month after visiting the store, now the display is out, took it back to Apple store, now the said the connection between display and m/b was bad and would cost $ 400 plus. Technician said it’s cheaper if I go to other vendor to get it fix

I have the same issue with my Macbook Pro touch bar 13” late 2016. This is just crazy. I hope Apple will notice this. There is something wrong with Apple products without Steve Jobs. I don't know how to fix it because i live in Indonesia. There is no Apple store here. And the price to change the cable or display is just crazy. 2 years old Macbook feels like 10 years old. Why can this happen Apple?

Guys, I have the same problem! I contact Apple here in Brazil and they gave me the same answer: it is not possible to do a free repair because my MacBook is out of the warranty time. I am very angry with this situation and I am with contact with Specialised Support to find out if they can solve my problem. The guy who helped me said it's VERY IMPORTANT and HE STRONGLY RECOMMEND for everyone who had the same problem to send it to Apple through the link https://www.apple.com/feedback/ . They need to know that the number os cases increases everyday and it's NOT a isolated case.

I had to pay 1000 USD or 70000 INR to get the display fixed.

I asked to return the damaged display, but then the apple service asked me to pay 1500 USD instead.

Apple escalation really lost my patience and time. I am only waiting for law suit now.

Did you go to an Apple authorized service center (real)? While I know imported products into India is expensive $1k for a replacement to me is on the high side - Sorry

Did you try to push for a warranty exception? Apple Stores here in the states have been replacing them if pushed or have spit the difference.

I don't know what avenues you have in your governments consumer protection I would contact them to help you.

I have the same issue with my late 2016 macbook pro. I took it to Apple store and they quoted $650 CAD to replace the screen since it is out of warranty. This is totally unacceptable for such an expensive laptop!

Folks,

Everyone’s best bet right now is to provide feedback at ++https://www.apple.com/feedback/++ . If enough people tell apple about the issue, apple may start a, what they call, “Quality Program”; just like they did for the keyboard issue after 8-9 months.

I went to two different stores and got the same answer, viz., provide ++https://www.apple.com/feedback.++

We had a 15” and waited for almost one year 10 months. We went to Reston store around Aug 17th in Northern Virginia and though the quality program is for 13”, they fixed our 15” screen. In addition, they replaced our keyboard and fingerprint scanner. It was a relief as I had taken it multiple stores and all of them had refused. If you are traveling, take your Macbook with you and try Apple stores in every city. Raleigh, Durham would not fix it but Reston, VA did it. Hope this helps.

Check the consumer rights in your country. Apple may legally obligated to repair the device for free. Because of the consumer rights in my country (United Kingdom), Apple had to cover the costs of the repair. If this applies to you, waive your consumer rights in the store or make a claim by contacting Apple here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201232 .

For those who consumer law does not apply to, it may not necessarily mean you have to replace the screen. When in the store, the Apple worker informed me of the prices if I had to pay. He said that the price for the cable (around £100) and the price for the screen (around £300) were separate costs. And I could have the cable replaced without replacing the screen, reducing the cost. They even showed me the Apple Store email confirming the two separate prices. So it may only end up costing £100 not £500. Arguably still a high price for a cable, but a lower price than originally quoted.

EDIT: This cable that the Apple store said they could replace for £100 turned out to be the wrong cable and the one which either supplies power to the screen or transmits information (not sure which one) but it did not fix the issue. They said it would be a £500 screen replacement.

In all the cases we have seen, the issue is with the backlight LED cable which is soldered and runs deep underneath the LCD and cannot be replaced. The eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) LCD cable almost does not spoil. In our experience the eDP LCD cable only gets spoilt in liquid spillage cases.

If you do get lucky and that's the part that requires replacement, then yes you are in luck. It's probably less than USS $100 in most countries.

I recently took my MacBook into the apple store, I showed them the site and they said it’s not as big if a deal as people are making it and want 475 for the repair. I declined the repair price. I still have a broken MacBook and we can see apple truly doesn’t care

I had the same problem and took my macbook to a service center here in the Philippines. They charged me 600 for the repair. I declined. 2 months later I took it to the apple store in HK (where I bought my laptop) and they fixed it for free. Initially they hesitated but I insisted and the manager agreed to waived the charges. I did not have a laptop for 3 months but it was worth the wait. I would never pay those ridiculous charges when clearly its a faulty product.

Does anybody know of a DIY fix for this?

I saw somewhere a guy who did some kinda ‘‘bridges’’ on the flex ribbon, but I can’t find the picture. I wouldn’t do it myself but can take my mbp to someone who could do it, I’m sure I’d pay less than those ridiculous $500 Apple wants me to pay .

If you have consumer rights in your county there’s nothing really to worry about. Go into an Apple store and tell them the issue you are having. If they fail to offer any free repairs, cite your consumer rights and they should legally replace the screen for fee. Be sure you check your rights first though.

Yes, this happened to our daughter's 13" 2016 MbP in Dec 2019, and now to my 15" 2016 MbP. Hers was fixed for free in NYC, where she lives, but now that a local Apple Store in the Greater Houston (TX) area has logged it as an issue on my 15" and told me that it would cost $800(!!!!) to fix, my only hope is for more people to report the issue, so that Apple will deem it a recall issue and repair for free. If I'd gone to the Houston Galleria Store, they may have done it for free (they've done stuff like this for free for me before), but maybe not now that it's been logged in their system. It is presently at a 3rd party store awaiting evaluation, but the tech told me over the phone that they could do it for $140! Not sure that will happen, though.
