Dyson DC 35 handheld intermittently shutting off

With trigger pulled, it shuts off and then have to pull the trigger again and it works. After about 5 minutes or so of using it with it shutting off intermittently, when it shuts off, I have to wait a couple of minutes before it will work again.

If your vacuum suddenly turns off during use, see the Dyson DC58 Shuts Off While In Use problem page for possible causes and solutions.

There is a tab on the filter that wears down and stops it from running for more than a few seconds. You can flip the filter over to test to see if this is the issue. Here's a video on how to check for that issue:

I’ve had this problem ever since buying it new. I contacted CS and they shipped me a new handle/switch. That did absolutely nothing to help. Ever since, I’ve been putting up with the 5 to 10 second on-cycle. Today I tore it apart and cleaned absolutely any and all areas and parts. I think my solution is to get a Shark or similar and ditch Dyson.

Solved my problem. Bought a Shark and threw the Dyson away. I really love the Shark.

I find sharks just as troublesome, if not more to maintain that dysons

Agreed. The Dyson is expensive crap and it's going in the bin.

I have a DC35 Animal too, with the same problem. The little motor in the brush-head is very sensitive to low voltage and will stop if it doesn’t get enough “juice”. There are 2 reasons (in my case) that seem to affect the amount of power delivered to the head (assuming the battery is charged). 1) A filter that is slightly clogged will cause the main motor to draw more current, thus depriving the brush motor of adequate power. Clean the filter with running water and let it dry. 2) Dirty electrical contacts. When you separate the motor and battery assembly from the rest of the cleaner, look for 2 little gold-plated contacts. If they are even slightly dirty they will act as a resistor, limiting the current that would otherwise be available to the brush motor. Clean them with a pencil eraser.

Hi, this doesn’t work for everyone since the problem can (in my case at least) exactly be the same whether the vacuum or filter are in place or not. Really would like to know how to tear down the motor closet as i guess it would be a matter of over pressure inside, caused by dust or whatever. If anyone has managed to open it whithout breakîng everything i’m in!

Solved: when keeping pulling trigger after motor stops, led flashes. Number of flashes indicates error code: in my case more than twelve means battery weakness. Source YouTube /Dyson aftermarket services.

Removed filter sock from cone shaped filter and found that about 2” of debris clogged at the bottom of filter cage that cleaning with water wouldn’t remove. Handheld runs a lot longer now. They also sell replacement cone filters.

For me the problem with intermittent service from the Dyson DC35 was hair clogging up the machinery of the motorised head and causing it to stop spinning after a few seconds, meaning I had to keep pressing the trigger again as you mention.

If that could be it, try my illustrated guide to fixing it at:
