Nintendo Switch not charging, USB-C port, BQ24193 or M92T36 chip?

Hello everyone!

Recently I got a Nintendo Switch that suddenly stopped charging.

Now it is completely dead. Black screen, no battery charging signal whatsoever.

When it is placed on the dock, the green light starts blinking fast and stays that way until unplugged.

I tried replacing the battery to no avail.

I´m not sure if the USB-C port could be the problem, or maybe i need to replace the M92T36 charging power control chip, or the BQ24193.

Any suggestions on how to find out the damaged part?

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:

I managed to get the system started with the new battery, everything works, but when i connect the psu in the charging port it doesnt respond. It shows no signal of charging. When the charger is connected, the system starts to overheat (even when it is off).

It seems this is a port problem. What do you think?

Hola ahora te funciona bien? Tienes un esquema de donde soldarla la bateria universal?

- de

I'd very much like to know too, what IC are you using? Some more details would be very much appreciated

- de

So in my case, I had 4v at the point you had soldered to there ao I'd say the M92 IC was ok and its the actual charging managment IC I have a problem with

- de

Hi joelwhybrow! in where point do you reveived 4v?

What IC do you belived you have bad?

- de

Hello rodocopjr, what chip have you used for your test ? in the second screen there is no flash icon next to the battery icon, so the console doesn't detect battery charging because of the chip is out and your external chip did the job ? thanks for your answer

Hello,

I have recently experienced the same power issues with my Nintendo Switch. The switch stopped taking a charge randomly and now it is completely dead and will not take a charge. I went through all the self-help troubleshooting guides via Nintendo’s support site but to no avail. To send it out for repair to Nintendo costs $99 plus tax with a turnaround time of 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. Has anyone on this platform been successful in fixing this issue by taking another route other than sending it for repair to Nintendo? I am curious as I would love to repair this on my own. Also, I would like to know if parts are of equal value to what Nintendo charges. Knowing that will determine if I will send it in or repair it myself.

Thanks for the help!

My guess would be a faulty USB-C connector, since I had a similar problem. The part only costs about $6 on eBay, but it's pretty tricky to replace (see YouTube).

Yeah, that sounds about right.

What happens when you leave it running off the AC adapter/Dock? Does it deplete your battery? Is the system showing any decrease in battery levels when running in any modes?

Thanks for your time reading and answering my post.

Last time it booted, the console showed 30% of battery charge.

I don´t know if the reading was correct.

In that time the battery level decresed normally and was shown in the screen.

This happened after i disconected the battery and pressed the power button a few seconds to completely discharge the motherboard.

I managed to turn it on and off many times, and everything seemed to work fine except the charger was not detected at all when conected to the usbc port (docked or directly).

The next day it wouldn´t power on, like when the battery is competely depleted. No battery signal, no attempt to start the screen whatsoever.

I'm sorry, I read your post again and I noticed it doesn't work when docked. My idea was to see whether it was outputting to HDMI, which would require proper power negotiation with the dock, function apparently handled by the M92T36 chip. Since this isn't working, I would say this chip is probably at fault, which also does not mean your BQ24193, which is the actual battery charging IC, is functioning properly either.

If I were you, I'd first order an M92T36 replacement and give it a try.

Yes, i tought so too. I already ordered a new usbc port and a M92T36 IC.

Those are my best bet.

Hello Nahuel,

Was the M92T36 the problem you have got?

Thanks,

In my case, some pasive components like resistors and capacitors were off value, so replacing those did the job.

My switch now works fine and charges normally. The only side effect i found is that the processor wont turn off completely, even after the OS is shutdown, it still heats and consume battery, so i have to keep it suspended.

This is problem of the M92T36 that is failing in the power off sequence, so i guess the definitive solution would be changing the IC, but for the time it will do as it is.

Hello Nahuel,

Which resistors and capacitors were off value specifically?

Thanks

What resistances should be reviewed? . in my case I used a generic dock and suffered excess voltage now does not load nor does it give an image when I connect it to the dock. Please specify the values of resistances

You should check all of them one by one from the usb port to the BM92T36

There is no datasheet for the T36, but this one is pretty similar so you can check the correct volages the IC should be recieving from the power supply:

https://www.rohm.com/datasheet/BM92T30MW...

Here you´ll also can find usefull information about test pads on the board:

https://reswitched.tech/hardware/testpad...

You should start from cluster K on this schematic:

Where can I buy the BM92T36. My switch is suffering the same problem it dosnt charge or power on anymore

- de

Aliexpress is a good place to find this IC

- de

Ok thanks I will check it out. An does your switch still work. My dosent charge or anything even when I put it into the dock the light dosnt blink green anymore. I check the USB slot and all the copper wire is ok nothing poking out or bent. My switch isn't even a year old and was brand new when I bought it. So for it to be doing this is mind boggling.

- de

Also I'm not finding the BM92T36 on the website. I am however finding the BQ24193 is this the same thing?

I experienced a similar problem and followed these steps. Everything works now, but I don’t know what caused the issue, or whether it will reappear.

Unfortunately, it seems that this is only a temporary fix, as the issue has reappeared. I'll try to find another dock + AC adapter to do further testing.

- de

It turns out that neither the dock nor the AC adapter were faulty, since they both worked fine with another Switch. My original Switch had a faulty USB-C port, which wouldn't connect properly to the cable unless I would wiggle the cable around, hoping for the connection to be made.

Same exact problem, replaced the M92T36 Chip and that didn’t fix it, and then replaced the C Port and it wasn’t that either. Now going for the BQ24193 Chip, will keep you guys posted.

It'll be great if you could upload images along with a brief description of the steps you've taken to solve it.

In my case I'll try to change the M92T36 first this weekend, and see how it goes.

You must really trust in your solder skills, three interventions on the same board seems very risky. Hope it'll work, it comes to a point when ordering pieces and replacing them is not worth it, unless you're doing it just to prove it can be done haha

- de

Could you repair it with the BQ24193? I just tried changing M92T36 replacement with no success. Mine is not charging and also is stuck in nintendo switch logo.

- de

None of those fixes worked, sorry about the lack of an update. In the end I wasn't able to to fix it, and then I gave the switch over to someone who said they can try fixing it and now I think I got scammed and he hasn't replied in months. The only fix I feel is what I saw another person on ifixit do with the same issue, they changed the resistor values or something like that.

Hello, i have the same problem. Switch is not charging anymore with official chargers but with no name USB-C charger (0.5 to 1A) it’s ok but slowly.

Dock is blinking. I dit the 30 second power off thing : didn’t work.

Do you think i’ll have to change the USBC port or a chipset?

Sorry if this is completely wrong, but it could possibly be the charging management chip. I hope that other people who have more experience repairing the Switch than me can try to answer the question as well, but it sounds to me that the charging management chip needs to be replaced. Good luck!
