iPhone 7 Plus Microphone Causes Apps to Freeze/Hang

Any app that uses the microphone on my wife’s iPhone 7 Plus freezes. Any made or answered call there is no received audio and they can’t hear her. When trying any video app, Camera or Snapchat they hang. Voice Memo will hang when the record button is pressed, timer doesn’t count. I’ve tried restoring through iTunes with no luck. She is currently on 11.2.5. She thinks this started after updating, could this be software related or hardware? Also when ever a soft reboot is tried it hangs at the Apple logo, a hard reboot, power and volume down, is required, sometimes multiple times.

Thank you.

There are several microphones on an iphone and which one is used is dependent on the application.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203792

  • The bottom microphone is for Voice Memo and phone calls. The other microphones serve as error cancellation
  • The (top) front microphone is used for FaceTime calls, Siri and selfie videos with the front camera (FCAM). The top back microphone serves as error cancellation
  • The (top) back microphone is used for videos with the rear camera (RCAM). The top front microphone serves as error cancellation

Make sure you update your device to the latest version of iOS and then try to isolate which microphone is not working properly by trying each individual microphone with the related apps above. If the issue affects more than one microphone, then it could be the Audio Codec IC on the logic board.

Anything at the logic board level will require micro-soldering so you would need to find a repair shop that offers those services.

All instances cause hanging. Could a bad top front microphone cause issues when either the bottom microphone or the rear microphone is being used, as they both use the top front for error cancellation?

Also, what is a typical cause of microphone or logic board failures? The phone was briefly dropped in water several weeks ago, I would hope the water resistance is still somewhat intact.

Water!?!

That changes everything.

* Open your phone and remove the logic board

* Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.

* Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, 80% of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.

* Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.

* Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.

* Rinse in alcohol and repeat.

* Let it air dry for a day.

* Re-assemble and hope for the best.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to repair your phone because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

Opened up the phone and didn't see any signs of corrosion.

The phone now will not get past the Apple Logo. iTunes can still communicate and reload software, just won't power on. Also, even with it on the charger, multiple cords tried, it will show the battery icon indicating low charge at times. Seems like it is not getting a charge. I've ordered a replacement charging port board, hoping that it is the problem, especially since one of the microphones is attached, for $10 its worth a try.

The phone degraded overtime, wasn't a sudden failure. When internal components fail on iPhones, what's the root cause? Do the IC chips fail internally or is it a solder joint failure? I work in a facility that manufactures Class 3 devices. I was thinking if it's a stress issue that causes a solder joint to fail I could re flow the logic board. From the pictures in the tear down it doesn't appear the logic boards components have coformal coating like the charging board.

iPad rehab has an in depth explanation of the audio ic issue, worth listening to here:

I have a similar issue to this one , bought a used iphone 7 that I suspect had water damages, stuck in boot loop. Finally got it out and set up as a new phone but any apps requiring microphones hang/dont work. So I think I'll give the iso bath a try and a micro soldering shop.
