Rear brake replacement any tips

To save money I'm trying to replace the rear brakes on an 01 crv I'm having a lot of trouble is there any tips any one can give I have it all together but the main tensioner spring and adjustment rod when stretching it the spring goes over the adjustment wheel on the driver side and I'm worried that it will affect adjustment is there something I have done wrong or is there a trick I'm not seeing. Thanks for any help you can provide.
