Dropped Phone in Water

Dropped the top of the phone (the half with the cameras) into a small glass of water for about three seconds, then fished it out. Panicked for at least five minutes, so I assume some valuable time was wasted. When I got it out, there were vertical straight lines across the screen, with the appearance of a glitch. After two minutes, it went back to normal with a small stain of water behind the screen. Afterwards, the phone started vibrating constantly and the lines reappeared, but the screen was responsive. Fast forward about 20 minutes, where I realise now i should have turned the phone off immediately, but I hadn't because I was trying to get the SIM card out first without any success, as it would not eject. I gave up, left it in, and surrounded the phone after shutting it off in rice (which may do nothing, as everyone says, but I'm desperate and I won't open up my phone). I'll be waiting about half a week or so until I start it up again, without charging the phone while I am waiting.

So, the question is: will the phone be likely to work again? The screen was working for about 30 minutes, though it was vibrating constantly until I shut off the phone. It was only in water for seconds, was at half charge and will not be charged while waiting, and the SIM card is still in. Getting very nervous. have thousands of photos that have not been backed up yet due to a lack of iCloud storage, and if I lose them, I'd be very upset.

Also, before the "the phone in rice doesn't work" I know it likely won't, but I'm giving it a shot anyway. I don't have the resources to open it up and clean it.

You'd better sync your phone with iTunes or iCloud, in case it's totally broken and you can't get access to your iPhone data.

- de

I can't. To enter my icloud i have a verification system that sends a code to my phone. Plus, I have no iCloud storage left.

- de

Hello Wen. iCloud dual-verification lets you send a code to either your Apple device, or as a text message to whatever phone number they have for you. You could insert your SIM into any phone compatible with your network and receive that text.

Best way to know is to clean it out.

Water Damage

Important notes:

Stop applying power to the device, you may end up shorting out the board.

It's time to open and start cleaning. BE VERY MINDFUL OF THE SCREWS, the screws are placed in certain holes for a reason. If you placed one in the wrong place and over screw it, you're basically screwed (pun intended).

Take your time, do not rush, and thoroughly look for the water.

If you don't feel like you're up to the challenge, search for repair shop that has the proper equipment to do so.

Good luck friend

Wen Wei just to reiterate what @juax is already saying. As with any other liquid immersed device you need to follow a few steps for proper trouble shooting.

stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse.

The very first step I would take is to disassemble your phone. Use these guides iPhone SE (1st Generation) to help you disassemble your phone. Take a careful and close look at all components and connectors. Truly assess the damage. Look for major corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. You will have to remove all the EMI shields. If you do not remove the shields, you are not cleaning the board. Once you got the gross contamination cleaned, use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and clean your parts some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for an Apple iPhone 3G but it is still pertinent to your phone as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning. Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. Do not use drinking water, if you need to use water, use sterile water. Also, you do not need to leave it to dry for a day. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and dissipate the water. The importance here is the cleaning. It would of course be best to get it professionally cleaned Do not forget to replace the battery. This is a must and not an option. It will fail if you do not take care of it now. After that, reassemble your phone and re-evaluate. For as long as you have not cleaned your board and replaced the battery, everything is just a guess. Keep in mind that water damage is the hardest to troubleshoot and to repair. It does not matter if is was exposed for 2 seconds or 2 hours, what matters is where the water (particulates) did the damage. I understand you do not have the resources to open it up but the longer you wait the less likely your chances to revive this phone. Yes, Rice does not work.

Thanks @oldturkey03 ! I ended up rushing the answer because I had a customer walk up to me while I was typing out.

fatal error in not turning it off instantly.

but the SE does have a bit of waterproofing; its not waterproof but it does have better waterproofing than the previous models (similar to the 6 and 6s in fact)

in this case the immersion (if your story is to be believed) was minimal; but the time taken to remove power, and therefore short circuits, wasnt. Thats where the damage will occur.

youre just going to have to wait and see and if you do get it back up and working and your photos recovered i suggest you open a Google account and store all your photos online with google for free!

Fatal? As in past the point of no return?

- de

Fatal as in you have damaged a component; guaranteed. The faster you remove power from the device the less damage water will do with arcing components etc

Charging, syncing, anything with power simply increases the likely hood of more damage occurring due to shorting out components
