victoriaellis900 this should work for your Kindle. Remember that this will delete all of your personal files.
Starting with the Kindle turned off, press and hold “Volume Down” and “Power”at the same time.
The Amazon system recovery screen should appear. Use the volume buttons to switch to the “wipe data/factory reset“.
Press the “Power” button to choose the selection.
Use the volume buttons to toggle the selection to “Yes — delete all user data“.
Press “Power“.

I was initially unable to follow these instructions for getting into Recovery Mode, but I think that I may have been confused about 'Volume Down'.
I was trying to follow the instructions with the tablet in upright position and was pressing the left-hand side of the volume button. That didn't work.
I notice that other users describe entry to Recovery Mode as using the Volume Up button (see: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/amazo...), it occurred to me that oldturkey03 may have envisioned the tablet in horizontal position (which reverses the volume button function). So I tried again, this time pressing the right-hand side of the volume button (with the tablet in upright orientation) and was able to successfully get into Recovery Mode.
So, if oldturkey03's instructions don't work for you, try again using the other side of the volume button.
so when you powered your Amazon back on was all your stuff deleted was it like brand new again and could you sign into your accounts without knowing the old one

Thank you so much I'm trying it now it's trying to it's still wiping data but it looks like it reset hopefully I can log into my new Yahoo account

I have tried the three options to clear my daughter’s kindle fire and I cannot get to the settings screen at all... can I take the device apart and disconnect and reconnect something to perform a factory reset?

From the Lock Screen, enter an incorrect PIN 5 times. You will see a screen with an option to reset completely. Choose this to deregister and return to factory settings.
