@franfritz on most Canon printer you start by opening the lid on your printer. Let the ink or toner cartridge slide completely out of the way. You will now have free access to the waste ink absorber.

Detach the waste ink absorber by pulling gently on its rubber frame. Pull it away from the printer to remove it completely.

Unplug the printer to prevent mishaps.

Remove the foam pads and place them in a bucket of hot, soapy water. Let them soak long enough for the ink to get loose. You should be able to scrub it away easily. Allow them to dry completely.

Reattach the foam pads and install the waste ink absorber again. After this you will have to reset your ink absorber counter. Use this SM to work on your printer Canon-pixma-mx310.pdf

Where's the rubber frame for Canon MX880?

There is a comprehensive YOUTube for a MP190 which also works for a MP210. But the pads seem to fall out of the rubber mount, and I can't find anywhere to get a replacement.

I can't get a replacement for ink absorber for ip2800 Cannon.

Cannon does not make them anymore, or have a part number to hunt on your own. I washed mine; it's drying now; hope it drys OK.

If not, I'll take a pic, trace it, then cut it out on some (guessing) 1/4" sponge or foam.

I am in the US and can’t find replacement pads anywhere for my Canon G 3200 printer. I tried cleaning the small one, and it is a pain, but doable. One of the larger ones is decomposing a bit. I may try to rig my own replacement pads, but I also liked the suggestion to route the two overflow/waste tubes through holes drilled in the back panel, and affix catch jars. No more pad swelling/overflow, and one could even recover the ink and reload it. Very clever idea — I might try that. I am disgusted with the entire throwaway society, and Canon is super-guilty in perpetuating it, so it is up to us to outsmart them.

For US: https://www.precisionroller.com/qy5-0558...

I have purchased them through Precision Roller and they're perfect replacements. G3202 (Walmart SKU G3200 I think).

MX870 - Same question as Margot Whitney’s question. There is no rubber frame that I can find. It appears that the MX870 is a different beast altogether than the ones that have the rubber frame for the ink absorber pads.

In Singapore the service is very poor ~ buy other brand.

They will ask you to buy a new printer and discard your existing printer.

Shame, shame and shame.

What was the answer?

Any sufficiently thin absorber -- sponge, even paper towel -- will do. Its task is solely to sop up excess ink.

Thank you! I tried to clean the tiny pads on an old canon mg2021, and I dropped one back into the printer. Trying a bit of paper towel, so far so good, i'm encouraged by your comment :)

Well I just took my pads out of my Canon MG 3600 Multi-function Ink Jet - WOW they were saturated to the MAX! I put then in a plastic container and rinsed and rinsed and squeezed the heck out of them then used paper plates and paper towels (lots of paper toweling) to try and get the ink sucked out of the felt pads and get to a point where they can dry. There's still goo in the place where the plastic pad holder sat and I think I will just leave that alone - as it would make more of a mess inside the printer! I looked on line for a long time before finding this post -- And thank you Fran Fritz! NOW the REAL PROBLEM is how the HECK do i put them back in the correct spots after they dry... That will be a guessing game unless there happens to be a diagram or video somewhere I can see! Thanks again for this post -- RichInKY

Precise positioning of the pads is not a problem -- just cram them in low enough to clear any moving parts. The bigger issue is resetting the waste ink counter that disables the printer.
