2010 ford f150 radiator fan stays on

2010 Ford F150, Radiator fan seems to be running on high more than it should. Fan kicks on about 30 seconds after vehicle is started and is extremely loud. Even kicks on when its a cooler day. Also stays on when driving down the highway. Thought the fan was supposed to kick on when it reached a certain temperature then goes off once the temp drops. Switched out the high and low speed relays and did no good. I also noticed on the highway about a 30-40 minute drive the A/C was not blowing as cold as it should that I started sweating. Does blow cold when driving around town at low speeds or even just sitting there. Not sure if the continuously running fan and A/C not blowing as cold as it should are tied together.

2014 f-150 Sox 4x4 5.4 liter My fan seems to be running more frequently than normal and it is loud almost like truck is idling high but why now never have heard it since the truck was knew now at 72,000 miles it has started what is the diagnosis?

- de

There is no resolution to this problem that i have seen here. I have a 2013 f-150 v-6 turbo charged. Temp can be not even to the normal or even just on start up and both fans running so loud and annoying. Seems to come and go. I did a water pump change and seems to have started after that work(not right away). Kept adding coolant to level as the air worked out of the system( MONTH or more!!) I had read in a blog that can be the problem. Still did it. Then it just stopped doing it. Now starting again. Seems to be associated with A/C system but do not know how. Anyone have any ideas??

- de

My fan just came on when I got it worked on it stays on and it’s loud it’s never done it before what’s wrong

- de

For James above, we are having a very similar problem. 2013 5.0 v8, car went for last warranty service, they hooked it up to the computer and Ford’s latest update alters the temp the high speed fan cuts in to improve low speed AC performance. We live in Dubai so the thing runs constantly!!! Ford say they can’t change it back either.....We are stuck. It’s the wife’s car and she now wants to sell it!!

- de

DeeAnn above same goes for your problem, it’s the Ford software that has screwed your car.....

@bhurry turn your AC off and see if the fan still stays on. The loud sound could come from your Fan Clutch for the same reason your fan stays on. Let us know what engine size your F-150 has so that we can possibly get more information for you.

It's the 5.4 and the fan does quit running when the A/C is turned off. I have to turn A/C off when i go to the drive through at the bank. I heard that the fans in the 2010 are just an extremely loud fan? Would the blower motor resistor have anything to do with the fan not working properly?

- de

@bhurry yes they are loud but for as long as your temp is good the fan is working properly. No, that is not related to the resistor. The fan does turn on with the AC it is designed like that. Just a heavy duty fan....

- de

I have the same problem and I have never in my 29 years ever heard any truck fan as loud as mine and ac sucks

- de

I have a 2012 F150 5.0L was doing the same thing. Have all fluids supposedly topped off on last 2 oil changes. Changed relays and Hi-pressure sensor on AC.

Turned out the Coolant was low, but not low enough to register a real hi temp. The Coolant reservoir is stained at the max fill mark, so the oil jockeys thought it was full, and never opened it. Ended up putting 2.5 gallons of 50/50 antifreeze/coolant and the problem went away. Drove from FL to ME with this condition, hope no long term damage done, so far so good, 2 months later.

Hello,

I have a 2014 Ford Expedition the fan recently has been running excessively even on cool days. This issue only began around 2 weeks ago. The Ford has 78,000 miles on it and we are the original owners.

Had same problem with my 2014 F150. Solved the problem today. Long story short never add Freon yourself with one of those do it yourself cans from the parts house. I did it and allowed moisture to get in my system and slightly overfilled as well. Turns out the computer in fords senses this and as a safety feature tells your high speed fan to kick on.

I took to a shop that properly removed my Freon then ran a vacuum to get moisture out, them filled to proper level.

I had the fan coming on after 20 second of the AC being on. Evacuated the AC system and recharged. Problem solved. As stated before the computer hooked to the ac system is reading containments in the system.

- de

Sorry guys, the computer does not see contaminants in the system, it only senses system pressure. With too much freon, its overpressure which creates lots of heat thus the need for the extra fan and the poor AC cooling since it is overheated and cannot cool itself down enough.

- de

Exact same thing happened to my 13 f150. Replaced blower motor first cuz I saw some people doing the same on YouTube because of similar issues they had. Never again will I use that ac pro. So glad that loud ass humming from the radiator fan is gone. Couldnt even order at the drive thru.

- de

I agree my 14’ 5.0 did exact same thing from over servicing the ac with 134a in a can

- de

@Steven Vasquez my 2013 f-150 plat doing same thing, did have a guy put in a little freon a while back, but mine only does it when the outside temperature is above 102, even in the garage and has not been started for a day, if the air is on, the high fans turn on in 10 seconds, drives me crazy, in the cool to medium hot time, works perfect, cools perfect, seems like the computer senses the outside temp., started right after my truck had a recall for do a computer hardset , worked perfect until that was done,

Seen this on a few other forums. We had done everything we could think of. Replaced water pump, flushed coolant system and had serviced, replaced the ac sensor that one guys said worked for him, nothing seemed to work. Had another problem pop up and suggested fix for that was replacing fuse #27 under the hood. Pulled out fuse #27 and it was burnt on one end but not broken. Replaced it and haven’t had the loud jet engine fan noise in 2 weeks, even with warmer weather the past three days. Good luck!

Checked #27 on my 2013 F-150 5.0L as well and the fuse body is starting to melt, it has seen heat. In the manual it says it is for the fuel pump but cleaned the contacts and replaced it, removed and tapped on the fan relay's (#5, 40 and 86 I believe) and after running the truck for a few minutes the fan has not kicked in. It was coming on for the past week in minus 10 degree Celsius weather about 30 seconds after start up and staying on even on the highway. I don't have my electrical meter at home to test the relays but I will pull and bench test them when I am at the shop. As a precaution I think I may just replace the fuse and the relay's regardless. My coolant level is fine and newer I had the water pump replaced about 6 months ago. Thanks, I found your post very helpful.

- de

This fuse burned out because ford did not put a heavy enough fuse in. Ford offers a bigger amp fuse and u have to bypass the one in the fuse panel . They give u everything u need to do this. Sorry can’t remember part number

- de

It should have been a recall...shame on Ford.

My 2012 F-150 had the same issue.

I had the same problem with the fan running continuously even on cold days. I had a very good mechanic that I work with put his computer on my truck to diagnose it. It said my air conditioning line was putting out 496 pounds. He said it's my air pressure sensor that's is causing issue. When we unplugged it the fan turned off. I'm going to get the part tomorrow. None of the auto parts places had it so I have to get it from the Ford dealership. It's about $30.00. I'm hoping this solves my problem on my 2014 F-150 with the 5.0. It's an easy fix. Unplug the wire, unscrew the valve and replace.

when you say air pressure sensor do you mean the mass air flow sensor just asking because when i try to look up air pressure senor it comes up tire sensor . My 2012 f150 stx is doing the same thing

- de

Think he means ac pressure switch. Btw, can you change the ac pressure switch without draining refrigerant? I’d like to know, I have a 2012 Ford F-150 3.7l b6

- de

Yes you can, it has a schrader valve in the port that the sensor threads into. So you can replace it with out evacuating the A/C system.

- de

496 pounds of pressure is not due to your pressure switch, its due to a few other factors, one is that the internals a clogged up, holding the liquid freon back, another is simply too much freon, another is the condensor in front of the radiator is so very dirty and needs all the bugs and leaves cleaned off and another is if there are 2 fans, maybe both of them are not working together to cool down the condensor and lower the pressure.

A clog could be the condensor, the drier sock came apart inside, the output rubber hose of the compressor has torn internally or a clogged muffler if your output line has one, it looks like a bulged metal piece in the line, your orphic tube can be blocked with anything. If you have an infrared temperature sensor you can diagnose all these parts, check temps all along the system and look for quick drops of more than 10 degrees, that is where your problem lies. Technicians use their hand to check temps be careful high pressure will create heat and you can get burnt.

Had this issue with my 2015 Super-Crew 5.0 liter F150.I first observed the temperature indicator appeared to be in its normal temperature range during summer driving in New Mexico. I shutoff my A/C while the engine was still running, and within 45 seconds the obnoxiously loud, high flow fan shutoff. I shut the engine off for 30 minutes (resetting the computers and sensors). I started the vehicle and let run for 30 minutes, in that time not once did the high flow fan turn on. By segregating the A/C from the rest of the cooling system, I was able to see if the high flow fan was turning on due to the A/C or something else in the cooling system.

I have the equipment and experience to evacuate the refrigerant, contaminants, check for leaks and recharge the A/C. Many people do not and I strongly recommend you have an A/C certified professional do this work. This ensure the A/C system is properly, cleaned out, leak checked and recharged. Pressure verification and contaminant removal prevents an over pressure (or fluctuating pressure) situation as the contaminants can see the 3 states of matter due to the low and high temperatures created during the refrigerant compression cycle. Lastly, most contaminants are injected into the system due to the person recharging not properly cleaning the recharge fitting (Schrader Valve) free of contamination before recharging)

There are essentially 3 cooling interlocks in the F-150 system, and they are interpreted by the trucks software in the following priority

  • A/C High pressure sensor/switch (this is # 1 due to the system containing a gas/liquid vapor refrigerant that is compressed to create heat exchange. Pressure increases with increasing temperature, as well as contaminants in the system can create explosive pressures in this system
  • Left and Right cylinder head (engine) temperature switches
  • Coolant water temperature sensor

My fans come on just like you explain, but not always, they will come on with the air conditioning turned off as well, sitting in my garage all day, engine cool but the temperature is about 108 even in the garage, high fans come on in 20 seconds, obviously the engine is not hot, the air conditioning is turned off, this all started after I took my 2013 platinum in for a recall, they needed to hard set the computer, but since was in November so did not start doing it until the heat hit, that irritating high fan noise comes on sooner and and at lower outside temperature when the air is on, but will also turn on without the air on. very annoying.

- de

The issue is not your A/C if the high flow fan is coming on when your A/C if off. Take a look at coolant level, when did you replace it? What is you coolant water temperature? Thermostat, water pump, check for leaks in radiator and hoses, is your oil discolored, would inicate a leak in your heads

A scan tool can tell you what the ECT sensor is reading, if its off-scale high, meaning it not reading correctly due to a resistance problem, then you can change the ECT for cooling fans coming on too early, also be sure there is no air in your coolant system.

Wish I did, not enough clues.

Your AC Compressor is starting to fail internally if it is getting noisy under load, have it looked at before it granades and spreads metal shavings thoughout the system and everything will need flushed and changed.

May I ask why you are using the heater and the AC at the same time? Do you have a 2 speed fan, I would look into that issue with relays and possibly one speed being out on the fan motor?

2012 f150 5.0l 80k. Changed water pump,Tstat,and fushed system.

After, the air boat sound started.

Tried A/C switch, relay replacement,

4 different brands higher end Tstats.

Final fix ended up being the motorcraft OEM Tstat.

Hope this saves someone what

I fought through.

I also have a 2012 F150 with the 5.0V8. Had the water pump and thermostat replaced as the water pump was starting to leak, and when I got it back I also experienced the radiator fans kicking into high. My truck has never done this before so I knew something wasn’t right. I reached out to the mechanic and he verified that he did not use an OEM thermostat. I brought it back in and he replaced it with a motocraft thermostat and my truck is back to normal. Hope this helps someone else experiencing this issue after replacing their t-stat.

Same here. We have a 2014 F-150, 5.0L V8 and have been chasing this problem for a while. We did a coolant flush, a refrigerant flush and re-pressurization, coolant temp sensor replacement, and then had a NAPA brand thermostat installed that claimed to be OEM certified with no luck. The fan still ran hard. We then asked the mechanic to replace the shelf thermostat with Ford OEM Motorcraft thermostat and the fan operates perfectly now and no longer runs all the time when it's not necessary.

What I found to be the issue was the aftermarket Tstat. Poor fluid flow. Once I replaced the tstat went away… for a while. When it’s super hot out, comes on as I think the pressures are off in the A/C. Apparently, expansion valve gets something in it and causes pressure to sky rocket. But, if it’s super cold out, that should not be the issue. Can also be the A/C switch malfunctioning? It’s ridiculous Ford doesn’t have more on this as this is a constant issue with F150.

2012 Ford f150 fan running constantly and very loud only when ac is on and not very cold when it's on soon as I turn it off fan goes off a couple seconds later it's been very hot here in Tennessee I have 3 kids babies so I keep it running constantly when we are in the car husband tried freon nope still doing it he's a mechanic said it could be a few different things causing it but I really would like to just figure it out before him going thru the list it gets expensive buying parts we don't actually need anyone find out why it's doing this it's never done it before he did have to add about a gallon or more of water lat week it was very low that's when this started sometimes the fan will blow cool other days like today it won't just warm air but only on ac not max ac that one blows hot I'm going to try what one suggested and get antifreeze as that's what it needs instead of water it could be low again or like one said it's not reading that it's low it didn't read when he added the water last week either so maybe it's still low and doing this or the fuse but if anyone else has this exact same thing happing to theirs and found the problem please lete know thank you in advance momof3
