I know Apple says its readonly but my friend just got a macbook air and doesnt want it because hes going to get lion when it comes out. We were wondering if there was a way to reformat the drive to write as well. I remember during he teardown ifixit said they knew it was read-only but havent tried to hack it yet.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Apple is not going to introduce Loin with no way to install it. It may even come out as a flash drive instead of a DVD disk, probably both. You may even be able to "flash" the old USB flash drive with a download.
