Repair information for the Pony 42, a Troy-Bilt brand riding lawnmower.

Preguntas 23 Ver todo

Engine shuts off and barely starts. Leaking gas and white smoke.

Why does the mower not start with plenty of gas and oil in it? It's also leaking gas and has white smoke coming out the side.

Update (05/20/2017)

It was also leaking gas and had white smoke pouring out the left side.

Update (05/21/2017)

Here are some pictures of the mower in its current condition. Tried it today and it shut on for less than a minute then it shut off.

Is this from a hot or cold status?

- de

Both. I was using the mower and then it stopped. Tried to start it cold the next day but it won't start.

joannjones2k where is the gas leaking from? "had white smoke pouring out the left side." Left side from behind the mower or from in front of the mower? What exact model is it?

- de

The white smoke poured out from the front left side near oil tank. The gas or oil leaks from the right side in the front near the gas tank. It's a Troy Bilt 21 cutting width self propelled Briggs Stratton 725EX Series 190cc. I'm trying to attach a picture.

joannjones2k Is it possible you have over filled the oil. If you didn't use the mower last year the carb cold be fouled with ethanol from the old fuel . Try removing all the fuel then putting fresh fuel in . Was there any knocking noises when the mower quit? How much gas leaks out and does it leak when its not running ? If its coming from the fuel line? It can be letting air into the fuel line and keeping it from running .Does this mower have a primer is it leaking fuel there? If its possible can you remove the spark plug and describe it using this chart. I will help farther if you answer these question

Thanks for all the useful information, Jimfixer. You're probably correct about over filling the oil. I will have to find a repair shop to remove the fuel as I don't have a clue how to do this. I do recall some knocking noises before the mower quit. The gas leak is a lot in my estimation but it doesn't leak when its not running. The gas leak is near the gas tank. I will look for the spark plug.

joannjones2k, If you have checked all what has been suggested so far, and it is oil being expelled, you can check/remove the oil filler tube and check it has a rubber O ring seal in place at the base of tube, to seal to the engine fill port. If all looks good, there is a chance that the engine assy. case bolts may be loose/gasket blown out or there could be a actual crack in the engine case. Some of these mowers had up to a 4 year warranty, most were 2 year, If you can check if under warranty and if able use the warranty to have mower repaired/replace/refund. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Have you checked to see if there is a fuel shutoff valve? This could cause it to not get fuel flow to the cylinders.

I don't know if it has one or not. It's never shut off before. I didn't use the mower last year, maybe that's why it won't work. I don't know. Thanks.

campkdog, a shutoff valve would not cause it to leak or cause white smoke.
