Replaced battery, phone totally dead

Hello--I just did the iFixit battery replacement which seemed to go well. However, when I then plugged the phone in to charge, nothing happened. The battery did start to get warm, but nothing showed on the screen. And then the warmth went away also. I left it for a while but still nothing. I have just put the old battery back in, because the phone was working fine before all this. But alas, it still just sits there like a flat shiny potato. I've tried plugging it into the computer also, to no avail. What have I done!?!?

Only plastic. Tried to be so careful! And when taking out the battery, I only pried very gently and only in the places the video said were okay.

Okay! I scrutinized the logic board area and couldn't see anything amiss. I put the new battery back in and charged it a while. This time I connected it to iTunes and did a full restore in recovery mode. Unfortunately the screen is still black and the phone continues to show no sign of response. Seems I probably did do something to the physical components inside. Any idea of the most likely damaged area?

If your original battery used to work (just shorter lifespan) and now the phone doesn't respond or isn't recognized by iTunes, then you may have damaged the logic board while disassembling the phone.

As Cameron suggests, if you used metal tools to pry the connector, you may have a caused a short on the logic board. You may also have dislodged or pried some small components. Unfortunately, working on a logic board is not a DIY repair unless you have the right tools and some experience.

You should look for a repair shop that does micro-soldering repairs. Many of these shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

I do hope that is not the case. I only used plastic tools and tried to be very gentle. :( Is there anything else I can try...?

Of course now I see this on the Battery Replacement Guide page, which was not in the video and I swear not there two days ago:

"Use the plastic opening tool to gently pry the battery up, only at the outside edge of the phone. Prying anywhere else, especially near the logic board, may result in damage to the logic board."

If you only used plastic tools then you may not have shorted anything. You may, however, have pried some components off. The iPhone 5 is very prone to that, especially when replacing the battery.

Look at the edge of the logic board, near the connector, preferably with magnification to see if anything is missing or partially dislodged.
