Touch ID ORIGINAL home button not working after screen replacement

Lately I have had problems with the touch ID not working after I did a screen replacement. The home buttons are original.

What is causing the problem? I think it's ios 10 related since I've only had the problem with ios 10 devices, but I am not sure how to avoid it.

OP here. I re-use the original flex cable that is found on the metal shield.. I don't think the problem is the cable.

During the time I posted this and now I finally have some answers. First, during the posting period phones suffered a so called error 53 which basically was an error that when you removed the home button flex from the phone, the phone would stop working. Apple apologized for this and removed this 'feature', but phones in ios 10 and late ios 9 really had a problem when you removed them from the motherboard.

I later also discovered that iPhone 6 touch ID flex cables are very fragile and tend to make a very small crack in the location where it twists. So if you are not careful enough or you bend it around a few times it will get damaged! Look very careful if yours doesn't have a small crack in the corner. It's hard to notice sometimes. The home button will still work but the Touch ID will get disabled because of this and there will be no solution for it. I am very careful now when removing the touch ID on this location. I sometimes remove the metal back plate with the home button still attached to the flex cable. This seems to work out for me.

I hope you have learned something because of this!

Personally the biggest issue is how you reconnected the home button flex cable at the top by the group of flex cables. I've had SO many issues with the ID not working after installing a 3rd party screen, yet always worked the first time when installing the OEM screen. The quality of these flex cables that come with the screen just aren't good enough in my opinion. Not even close to good quality sadly. All you can do is keep disconnecting and reconnecting the flex until it works and do it with the battery disconnected each time. I ended up buying a used OEM screen off ebay and it cost me less than iFixit AND everything worked perfectly the first time of install.

I have a genuine screen, and have swapped out the home button to have the original (one paired with the logic board) present, but still I can't use touch ID? The connections seem firm, but no joy!

This comment inspired me to try something. It seems that the order of connecting cables vs. the battery matters. Make sure to connect the group of cables in the upper right corner before reconnecting the battery. So far this has resulted in consistent success for me.

sometimes a faulty touch id extension ribbon can cause this, check to see that all the pins are correctly seated, clean and connected properly first, is this is ok and the problem still persists then the likely fix will be to swap the metal plate on the back of the LCD which has the Touch ID ribbon cable attached to it; with the one from your original screen.

Hope this helps.

As Rayeasom has said, check everything is seated correctly, if so then you have probably damaged the home button cable. If problem persists after checking cables & connector fit a new home button, if that fails fit a new extension cable. If you do fit a new home button you will loose the fingerprint function. As a temporary fix use assistive touch in settings which will give you a on the screen home button.

angelinaelvina ,

Set up of id fail and must you try again or is the selection gryed out to set up touch id? if it is greyed out then your home button is faulty otherwise you can place a new flex cable that runs under the metal shield.

OP here. I've discovered that iPhone 6 home buttons rip very easily. I now usually just remove the home button very carefully, when I can I remove it equally with the back plate cover so I don't twist the cable. If you remove the home button flex a few times it will snap!

So I have an iphone 6 plus, original home button but after replacing my screen I ripped the ribbon that came with the metal shield behind the LCD, the homebutton ribbon is perfectly fine, I cant use the homebutton because its not connected to the phone itself because I dont have the connection from the metal shield, would i be able to buy a shield online and use touch ID?
