Controller won't turn on with batteries.

Hi, I have recently taken my Xbox One Controller apart to replace the ABXY rubber mat and when I put it back together it won't turn on. I can hold the home button down and it'll turn on but once I release the button it will turn off. Also, I can plug the USB cable from the console into the controller and it works perfectly. If anyone has any answers to why I won't work properly with batteries I would be grateful.

Check the contacts of the batteries are in the right place. When re-assembling the controller it is easy for the contacts to sit on the wrong side of the plastic housing and therefore not contact the battery.

@domh96, Dom, Try another set of good batteries inserted properly, check and clean battery terminals to ensure that are getting a good connection. You said you had the unit disassemble, could you have pinched/broken a wire for the battery terminal, disassemble and check connections. Additional info at troubleshooting link below. Good luck.

The chosen answer, while helpful in the vaguest ways, was about as much a canned answer for generic electronic issues I could see.

Microsoft has a few known defects in the controllers. One of which is a smoothing capacitor on the board that has a propensity to short out. When this happens it will not power the unit (controller).

If you have it apart (Microsoft warranty is always the best route) then look on the bottom of the board around the lower left of where the D-Pad engages.

Another issue is that the “B” button is on a separate board and it’s not reinforced enough. This normally causes much more significant issues like 100% failure of the controller. You’d know by looking between the two control boards and seeing one of the board sockets pull off the board.

I do not think this is your case based on what you have described though.

Look at the cap for damage or signs of over heating. Let me (us) know what you find.

Literally same thing happens to me, wont turn on, only blinks a few times then turns off, and a USB works as well. Now I know this might sound strange but I got mad one day and squeezed my controller and it actually worked, and it's an Elite controller as well. I have to squeeze the crap out of my controller while holding the power button and everytime it works. Idk why though.

my xbox one s controller was doing the same. i have disassembled the not working and the working controller and swapped the motherboards, the problem it's with the top one with the guide button. i have measured everything and compared and not finding anything different, all resistors and capacitor have the same value. But if I hold down the guide button the controller is working normally. I have find a temporary solution! I have soldered an resistance between pin TP33/C11 (mid right of central PCB connector block) , also you can short the pins. The controller is turning on normal and is working, but if you turn of the controller or the console you can't turn on the controller back (to solve this, just disconnect the battery from controller and you are good to go)! Every time you turn off you have to disconnect the battery!!

Similar prob insert batteries it would blink 2 times and turn off. Repeated this action and the front battery got super hot. Works with USB fine and strangely enough it's fine with a rechargeable battery pack so I will get another of theses rather than new controller. Hope this helps

Got my controller working by putting a little bit of foil in both battery compartments: between the batteries and their ‘springs’
