songs dont get transferred

i have an ipod nanao 1st generation 1 gb capacity

it works well good battery life and the screen works nothing wrong with it at all

except that when i plug it into anycomputer with any usb cable the computer doesnt read the ipod and the songs cant be transfferred help me out here please
