Keyboard rivets and no holes

Hello folks,

I had a few essential keys non working so I decided to replace the keyboard. I have bought screws, keyboard and disassembled my computer.

To my big surprise, after removing the original keyboard, there are no screw holes whatsoever on the case, just rivets.

I am attaching the photo of how it looks right now.

What should/could I do now? The screws have flat bottom, so they will not cut themselves in, is it possible to use flat screwdriver and a hammer and try to break little things with force? Or should I use some kind of rasp to remove them (even though I would probably need to drill little holes for the screws anyway) or just glue new keyboard in?

Please help me if you know the answer as my computer is on my desk in 20 parts unusable for the work.

Here is an older posting where we went over replacing the newer retina series keyboard: Replacing only the keyboard without full Topcase. Review John's & Jon's process.

Sadly, it's not an easy fix.

Frankly, I would just replace the complete upper case, but that would be more expensive ;-{

If you do replace the keyboard get the one with the replacement screws (you'll need them). And this is, as Dan said, not an easy repair even for a pro.

@mayer - Or, rivets which I think is easier than trying to force the screws.

@danj I know nothing about replacing rivets. Teach me, please? Where do you get them? Driving screws into rivet holes is hard work!

@mayer - When you order the keyboard is when I've been getting them. You do need to ask the supplier of the keyboard as many don't supply them.

As to putting then in I made my own tool, I'm sure you can buy one.

I took screw driver slightly larger in diameter than the rivet and cut off the tip so it had a flat end. I then found a small piece of brass tube that just slid over the drivers shank to hold & align the rivet. I place the rivet into the tool and pressed it into the hole, done! The hard part is getting the few rivets out when you pull off the old keyboard.

Thin flat head screw driver and a small hammer is all you need. Most of the rivets were stil in the frame after the keyboard was removed and I got all of them out with none broken off using just these two tools. Took me about five minutes. The key is to lay the flat head down when you tap on the rivets. It needs to be almost flat for this to work. You don't even have to hit the that hard. They basically just roll out.

This explanation is not clear. The rivet is the cylindrical projection sticking out of the keyboard's metal frame. How is the screw driver used? Do we just hit the rivet perpendicular to the keyboard frame? I can not get this to work?

figured it out. Lie the screwdriver flush with the keyboard frame and while pressing down on the frame and flat head simultaneously, tap the end of the screwdriver so the force is parallel to the keyboard frame and perpendicular to the rivit.

Hi, I just pulled of the keyboard… But most of the rivets are still in place (just the heads sheared off)

How do I remove them?! I don’t have pliers that filigree
