Upgrading my Cable Modem to DOCSIS 3.0 SB6141

This is both a question and gives information on how to save some bucks and a grip about cable company price gouging.

Suddenlink keeps calling me trying to sell me an internet speed upgrade. I already have 100 Mb download 10Mb upload with a 350GB download limit.

I have no issues with the speed. But I'm starting to hit my download limit every month. I know my usage has gone up with the addition of an Apple TV, Netflix and HBO now.

BTW. Instead of getting premier services like HBO from them, I did it through iTunes. You get three hook ups, so if I buy HBO Now, I can have it and also set it up at my girlfriends, she buys Netflix and shares it with me. It's about three dollars cheaper than the cable company but I can also have it on my iPhone and iPad,

So I checked and naturally I have to get a better faster cable modem, a DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. The cable company will rent this to me for $10 a month, (a ARRIS SURFboard SB6121 with 4X faster speed or I can buy one outright new for $70.00. I bought one off eBay for $40.00 one step up from what the cable company was offering. A SB6141 Surfboard modem with 8X faster speed.

My question is, can I just install it or do I need to register it with the cable company, then upgrade my plan?.

I was previously with some cable company that had the same crummy deal ;-) I just updated the modem. Had no issues with just replacing it, but it may depend on your provider. Since you already have the modem, just try and switch it over. Let us know what happens

Couldn't resolve connection issues with phone tech. They have to have all the numbers and record it in their system.

So the modem paid for itself in the first four months. I'm now saving $120 a year on the modem charge and have a 10% over their advertised 200 MB/s speed. I'm a happy boy ;-)

I use my own Cable Modem (Surfboard SB6141 ) with Comcast Cable. You do have to call their customer service and tell them you are changing modems and give them the MAC ID. This is located on the bottom of the modem. They need this so their system can address it. Also tell them to delete the old modem and you will return it so you won't get charged for rental.

One downside is that some bundle deals like triple play require you to have their modem to get the best price. You don't have to use their modem but its part of the deal so just keep it in the box. DOCSIS 3.1 is coming out and has much higher speeds but that only helps if the source offers very high speeds.

The cable company was unable to set it up over the phone but they could see it. Now have to have a tech come out. They did reset the old modem so I am still up and running. I think this is an effort to discourage buying your own modem.

Mayer, did a tech come out and get the problem resolved? Are you now using the SB6141?

Yes, took five minutes. he did the same thing I did but he got to talk to someone who knew what they were doing. No charge, Also I'm getting 220 Mbsp instead of 200, probably due to the faster modem.
