Why cant my xbox take on new memory

whenever i put in a game i haven't played before the xbox refuses to take it saying the disc cant be read. Went through multiple discs of the same game before realizing it was just new memory that it couldn't take. It also gives me the flashing red around the power button every once in awhile.
