What is a reasonable cost to replace the motherboard?

My Dell XPS 18 motherboard went out last week. I sent it in to the Best Buy repair service and they want to charge me $1060 to replace the motherboard. I am shopping around for a better deal. Is it worth replacing or is it better to invest in a new PC? In the past 5 years, when I've replaced PCs, they have lasted 1-2 years before dying on me. Advice?

You can get your dell laptop completely repaired with new mother board at Office Depot technical Dept for about $300 that’s the best deal I found and I had another one repaired at a computer repair store which ended up costing more and had to put back in a couple of times to get the kinks out.

Office Depot recommended it be repaired because it was such an expensive computer to replace.

Had to pay about $80 up from for diagnostics but took it off the final bill. My suggestion find a good Office Depot if you don’t have reputable computer repair store. If you have to keep taking back to computer store for minor repairs you need to find another store!

What kind of use do you expect from your laptop, motherboard failure is kinda rare on that new a machine. 1060 is to much to pay for service like that and get away from best buy . Their service department is there to service warranty work and tell everyone else that it would be cheaper to walk out on there floor and buy a new computer. Find a reputable computer repair shop in your area. A place that doesn't sell computers. but does repair. If your ruff on your laptop invest in a heavily padded laptop bag. Dont set it on pillows or blankets this plugs vents and causes overheating . Dont drink around your laptop unless its with a sippy cup that wont spill or if you have to drink 180 proof or better wont hurt the laptop if you do spill. don't drop throw slam or slap the baby or it will become mentally disabled and yes I'm still talking laptop. If you ever have had a laptop shipped to you you will see a fragile sticker on the box that goes for after shipping as well . So in a laptop should easily last 3-5 years and only get new if you need upgrades that are beyond the capability of the machine. Thats my 2 cents ....Hope it helps

I did a quick search, and it looks like you can get a replacement motherboard for around $200. Would you be comfortable opening it up and doing it yourself? If not, your best bet would be to get a new computer. For the same $1060, you could actually build a pretty decent custom PC.

That 1060 includes about 300 dollars of diagnostics (100) shipping (30) labor (150) tax 280 x tax rate. Roughly 300.

The rest is all parts. And they don't just fix what you ask to. They fix everything with OEM parts. When you get it back it will be just like you bought it.

That means if there is a tiny crack in the screen that hole assembly gets replacement and you get the bill.

Hello everyone I am a certified HP Dell and lenovo onsite warranty service technician. If you have any of those laptops under warranty, the cost is covered 100 percent by the manufacture. When you begin to love your laptop and take good care of it it should last 3 to 5 years. Now here's the part that becomes very interesting. All manufactures have one year warranty for all parts covered that fail to operate. I am not speaking of accidental damages like water spillage or drop on the floor scenarios. That is why you buy ADP (Accidental Damage Protection) plans to keep your laptop running. They usually cost between $200 to $500 depending on the model laptop for a 3 years ADP protection. Keep in mind , you are paying for only accidental damages plus it covers your parts after their one year warranty expires. This is the best way to save your money instead of running around looking to find a shop get your laptop repaired charge ridiculously high prices. I know most will not buy ADP plans at the time of purchase of a new laptop. Do yourself a favor, buy it or face the consequences of your new laptop costing you a lot of money in repairs.
