MacBook Pro (Late 2008) Wont Turn on

I have a late 2008 MBP that will no longer turn on. The orange/green light on the magsafe connector lights up but nothing happens when I press the power button. I suspect its the logic board since OSX was often freezing prior to this and I had to hold down the power button to do a hard shutdown. I know there is another little board that the magsafe connector connects to, but since the magsafe connector is lighting up I dont suspect that. Just trying to pick some brains on here. Thank you in advance.

I tried all the great advice and nothing worked. I replaced a new (refurbished) battery and it started. I knew the battery was dying on me but held off on changing it. I guess I needed a functioning battery to restart my macbook even though the old battery showed 100% charged and the power plug was in. Just wanted to leave my feedback to this great community of Mac users. Thanks guys.

I'm glad you fixed it! It can be tedious, grueling work. Must feel good.

There is this youtube video on a person who warmed up the keyboard with a blow dryer before starting. I now have to do that. Miserable but it is the price I have to pay to be cheap and hold off on upgrading my computer (AKA buy a new one.).

Ok here is the video:

Mike: you may try and open the laptop up ( following the infix it guides) and disconnect the battery and power cord. Then press the power button for ten seconds, then put it back together and see what happens. Sometimes the controller locks up after a bad shutdown and those steps should reset it. If that doesn't do it, then let us know and we'll try to offer another suggestion or two. Good luck

I saw that tip somewhere else and did try that with no luck. My MBP has a battery access door on the back so I didnt quite disconnect the battery but I just pulled it out for awhile and then put it back in, held down down the power button for 10 seconds and then reconnected the magsafe connector and still nothing.

Mike: it may seem trivial, but please try it again but hold the power button down with the battery out and power cord disconnected. Then put it back in and try it. Sometime the key is in the details.

Next step would be to look at the logic board for anything loose or signs of overheating.

Hi would somebody have another tip to try?:)

I have the same Macbook that has been ‘dead’ for the last three months. I tried everything, SMC reset, power button held down while plugging the charger in, battery off, battery on.

Nothing worked until today when I tried something different: heat. Lots of it. I ran a hairdryer over the keyboard, top-case and bottom panel (battery cover removed) while occasionally hitting the power button. After heating up the bottom panel, I flipped it back over and tried the power again: success.

Hope this helps someone. I think the trick for this machine now is to never shut it all the way down or to hibernate.

I went through every comment trying what people suggested and when I got to yours I said there’s no way this could be true. I grabbed my blow dryer and blew it at the screen for 2 seconds and poof it works like before thank you sooo much!!!

Incredible! this work. For me I had to heat for a few minutes, then I did the SMC reset and it works. This is not magic in fact. IT seems to be related to a deficient capacitor on the motherboard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvy-WrDd...

I also ran out of options, and thought this hairdryer method was a bit crazy—I tried it, and my 08 pre-unibody powered on long enough for me to reset the NVRAM and get video output! I was able to boot up OPNsense off a USB flash drive (closest thing to a bootable OS at the time), and the machine stayed on!

- de

Update: After pulling the CMOS battery, the machine would boot up as normal without heating up with a hairdryer. Unfortunately, the next morning, it was back to black screen, failure to POST, no chime. I did open up the machine, replace the thermal paste, isolate the thermal sensors, and nothing seems to impact the boot sequence (even disconnecting the CMOS battery for extended periods of time).

Back to square one, I guess.

Hey, I've got the same problem - after 2 months unused MBP Late 2008 won't started. Power adapter led is green, battery indicator is 100%. And no reaction to Power button press, long (10+ sec) press, bateery-off power on, SMC reset combination.

To be honest I thought about this idea with hair drier as stupidest I ever read. But I've tried. And it is started. Unbelievable! :) Thanks ! And sorry for my believe-less ;)

Try an SMC reset.

Connect the power adapter to the Mac. On the MacBook Pro's keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time. Release all keys and the power button at the same time – the little light on the MagSafe adapter may change colors briefly to indicate the SMC has reset.

Outstanding! Worked like a charm. For those wondering, it did take a few seconds for it to turn on.

Hello

it may be relative

but I was starting to think about taking the macbook late 2008 aluminium to the service center in the city I live.

I did several times all the steps shown in this link, but nothing worked.

https://support.apple.com/en-om/HT201295

What actually worked for me is the experimentarion of making the steps given in the link and also letting battery out, pluggin the magsafe to the laptop without a battery installed.

It is on right now, guess gonna see how it goes.

Louis Rossmann adresses the problem in this video and shows a solution, which is resoldering a capacitor.
