Replace HD with a compatible SSD
iMac intel 27" mid 2011 3.1GHz
Hello guys
Due to a fan defect in my iMac i now have to open and do some replacement. Therefore im going to change my HDD in that same procedure as well.
I dont want to have 2 harddrives but are rather looking for a solution where i can just replace the original one with an SSD, with a capacity between 500gb and 1TB.
I know that there is issues with the thermal sensor, and i have seen some previous questions regarding this on the forum, but since they are somewhat old, i take my chances to ask you if there is any SSD that is compatible with my imac, so that i dont have to spend more money and buy a sensor cable. Im from europe, which means that access to OWC is very limited, unless i want to pay toll (which i dont) :-) .
And btw, will it be a significant update? its a quite strong computer, but i feel that the HDD is the bottleneck.
Update (03/17/2016)
I was looking at this one, It says that there is a thermal sensor, but afaik the thermal sensor needs to be compatible??
Es esta una buena pregunta?

Please tell us why you think you have a fan defect. Has the hard drive been changed? I ask because there are hard drive temperature sensor issues with this machine that will cause a runaway fan, continuously running hard drive and eventual power supply burn out if not corrected.

I have had several issues with this iMac, litterally everything is almost changed by extended warranty by apple, let me just list it for you:
- GFX card
- Inverter board
- LCD
- Power supply
The fan is the one that is sitting below the optical drive, i checked this with SMC fan control, and its evident. This is a new issue for me, and has been going on for around 3 months. I'm using this imac alot, and my hdd has more than 17 months running time.
As far as i know, this sensor issue is only present if i want to change the HDD to an SSD.

@jeppechristensen12 - Sadly there is no SSD with the needed thermal sensor. You will need to use the OWC adapter (see Kevens answer for the link) to add in a replacement sensor so the systems heat management doesn't go crazy (if you are going with a SSD only solution).
While some folks have tried using software over-rides, over time we've learned they don't offer the needed protection as a hardware solution. Between burning-out the fan units, the thermal shock the delay and over run they create which wears out the logic board over time we don't recommend them.
See what Mayer can do to help you here to get to the root issue of your problem. Then revisit this after getting your system running. - Good Luck!
