My 2003 Saturn Ion (same GM platform) had the auto theft light come on when the battery was dead. Have you tried getting a jump from someone?

- de

Hi David,

I have not tried to charged the battery. I thought it was all charged the lights and the radio turn on. Thanks for your response I have to try it tomorrow.

You also say it's not the original radio. Do you simply have an after-market head unit in the car, or do you have one or more high-power amplifiers? If you are drawing a lot of current with your sound system, that would put a lot of strain on your charging system.

Your battery may very well have enough charge to power those things, but not enough to start. The starter draws a very large amount of current, so a slightly drained battery will not be able to get the engine to start.

Get a jump from someone and see if that works. If it does, drive your car straight to an auto shop and have them test your starting and charging system (battery, starter, and alternator). It's a fairly inexpensive test that doesn't take more than 15 or 20 minutes at the most. This issue sounds just like the problems I had with my car, and it ended up being a bad alternator.

Why could it be that, you ask? Well, the alternator (in case you didn't know) charges the car while it's running. When the alternator quits on you, the battery has to power all of those things itself, as well as start the car, and it never gets recharged. When you go to start your car again, the battery is too drained to meet the current draw of the starter, and your car doesn't start.

Radio has nothing to do with car not starting. In the ignition there is an rfid chip that sends a signal to the computer when it is turned. It is common for the contacts to wear out and cause the issue you are having. It can be fixed by, putting in a new ignition, bypassing the system like you would if you were installing a remote start, or taking it apart and sanding/soldering the contacts so they carry a strong current again. I can't remember where I found the information, it may have been on an enthusiast site like j-body or something similar. Try asking around on the Saturn Ion formus, I'm sure they can give more detail than I ever could.

You are wrong if you had this type of car you would not be writing incorrect information. Radio is absolutely tied to fuel pump when the theftlock is triggered.

it does have something to do with the radio i tried putting an aftermarket headunit in my car yester day andmy car wouldnt start and the gauges wouldnt work unless i unpluged it

- de

In your case, it sounds like you shorted the databus wire. 2000 and newer jbodies have a class 2 databus system. Meaning the computers and gauge cluster speak over a common network in the car. The stock radio has a connection to this in place of the switched 12v wire older cars have like 99 and older jbodies. The ONLY purpose of this connection, however, is for the door chimes and onstar. Beyond that, the stock radio antitheft and vehicle antitheft are not related. You shorted the network and this prevented the bcm from verifying the ignition code and from the gauges getting the powerup signal.

This car has an auto theft system which works with the radio when activated it cuts off the fuel. It has nothing to do with the battery. In order to reset it a code must be imputed using the stock stereo if u don't have the original radio u will most likely have to take to the dealer. This theft system is called theftlock

You can also reset it using a auto scan tool,

How do u get that code if there’s no power to the vehicle

- de

Only way to unlock the radio is to go to the dealer so they can use their Tech II diagnostic tool. Make sure you don't pay for a full hour of work as it only takes mere minutes to pull the code and unlock it for you. Talk to them and get a price, shop around if you have to and let them know you are so you don't get gouged.

And again, it has nothing to do with disabling the vehicle on these J-body platforms. The antitheft on the radio is only to prevent theft of that radio so you can't use it in another vehicle since it requires a databus connection to the bcm. With theftlock turned on the radio might as well be a brick if you don't have the code and try to use it in another car. If the theft light on the instrument cluster is on, it relates to the ignition module only. Two separate systems is what they are.

Roll down your driver window, you will need to reach in to start the car later on.

Also, make sure the radio and a/c and anything electronic that lights up that's plugged into your cigarette lighter is OFF.

Disconnect the negative terminal of your battery, just long enough to completely drain the car's electrical system of any charge. I did mine for 15 minutes. So, after 15 minutes, reconnect it.

Now, reach in and start the car. It won't start. You will see the anti-theft light on the instrument cluster blinking. That's perfectly okay. Now, with the dash lights still on, leave the keys in the ignition, and wait for at least 10 minutes or at least until the anti-theft light has stopped blinking. Go get a snack or something.

After at least 10 minutes or when the anti-theft light stops blinking, reach back in and start the car. IT SHOULD START. I have done this to my '98 Cavalier a few times, and since Saturns are GMs too, I don't see why it won't work.

Just give it a try and let me know how it goes!

The ignition module is the problem. The security chip contacts wear out in it over time. It's a common problem.

I have a 2005 Cavalierwe had an aftermarket stereo in it but it was hooked up wrong so the boy put in the stereo and hooked it up right and now my alarm system has gone insane. Didn't even know it had an alarm system. did the 30 minute reset but I still have dash lights on that I can't shut off and that's after I yanked out the stereo.I also can't shut the alarm off. the dealer can't do anything because I don't have power locks. this is 100% triggered by the stereo install. any help would be greatly appreciated

I finally found a way around the problem. Turn the key on and back off and count 10 min. Repeat 3 times and the car should start normally. Has worked several times for my 2005 Cav
