itunes insists on the password to access phone. However screen is smashed and lcd leaked and screen is black. How can I get contacts and photos out of it onto a new phone? thx

Hey,
Usually, if you can't input your password (often because people forget it, even though it's not your case), you can't really access any of the information. However, there's still a number of things you could attempt:
Using the app Image Capture (already preinstalled on a Mac) you should be able to extract all the photos from your phone and import them to your computer without the need of inputting the passcode. There are also other apps that should be able to copy other information from your phone. This article "How to Recover Data from Passcode Locked iPhone/iPad" should help you.
Also, if the information in your iPhone is very very important to you, you could always attempt to swap the screen. I strongly recommend this because you would not only keep all the information safe, but it is also cheaper than buying a new phone and, really, the rest of your phone is working properly. From my point of view, swapping the whole phone just because of a cracked screen wouldn't be too environmentally friendly, but that's up to you!
