Try plugging it directly into the Mac instead of a hub. If you are not using a hub, then the port you selected serves as one and you need to select another port. Disconnect your other USB devices and Firewire devices. Make sure your AC adapter is plugged it if using a Book. It helps us to know what king of Mac you are using.
