Can I use the display from my old (and broken) iMac?

Hey,

I have a iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06Ghz 24-Inch (Early 2008)

Identifiers: Early 2008 - MB398LL/A - iMac8,1 - A1225 - 2211

Its done for, it broke down a couple years ago, after brining it to apple, they told me it was the mainboard that was broken, and it would set me back a couple hundred euro to get the replacement parts. For its age, its just not with getting any parts for.

Now, im interested in utilising the display in this machine. As it has a 24" glossy TFT Active Matrix LCD (1920x1200 native) display, it would make a nice secondary display for my computer set up.

I would like to know if I remove all the 'guts' from this computer, and get a display controller and a fitting PSU, if that would allow me to have this iMac run (Graphically powered from either my MBPr or my tower PC)

I came across a few pages talking about exactly this, however, I lost them. Somehow, google is not spitting out the same pages as before.

That page mentioned getting a somewhat sketchy controller from a Chinese eBay retailer, and also had steps of how to implement them.

If you could maybe direct me to a page where I can get the proper hardware, and maybe some instructions, I would be very grateful

Philiopol, can it be done? Probably. Easily? That depends. You will need a video driver board, inverter and a power supply that works for your particular panel. Use the model number from the panel and scour the internet ( check ebay and alibaba for universal LCD driver) and contact the manufacturers with your panel number. If there is a kit for your panel, it is actually pretty straight forward. If there is not you will have to rethink it. Take a look at this guide about more information on a universal inverter. Different panel same idea.
