iPad will not charge unless it is tuned off

Disclamers: I use the larger original usb plug to charge (not a small iphone brick or my laptop). And a car adapter that is rated for iPad. There is no water damage. It was dropped a long time ago but has worked without problem before and since.

Today my iPad (2nd Gen) stopped charging when I plugged it in. Nor is it recognised by iTunes when I plug it into my macbook pro. Here are the steps I've taken.

1. Turned it off and on like this:

-"Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.

-Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears."

No help.

2. Then I reset it like this (multiple times):

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

No help.

3. Turned it off and plugged in the cord and it came on. Confirming that the cable is recognised by the device (hardware anyway). But when the lock screen appeared there was no lightening bolt in the battery confirming that it was not charging.

4. Plugged in and turned it off and left it for a while. When I turned it back on by holding the Sleep/Wake button I had 5% more charge than when I started. I did the same thing last night (all night) and got it up to an 80% charge.

5. This morning I did all of the above again with no luck so I went into Settings-> General-> Reset and "Reset All Settings" when it restarted it still did not show it was charging. So I did a reset again. No help.

6. I then went back and did an "Erase All Content and Settings." with the same result.

So now, for all my troubleshooting effort I have an iPad with no info on it and no way to sync it.

Can anyone see something else that I might try?

Also i just changed the charging port.

Having the same problem with my iPad 2 and performed the same troubleshooting as you. Have you found a solution yet? I don't know if I need to replace the dock connector or the battery.

I'm experiencing this again for the 2nd time with my iPad 2. The first time I just figured it was broken and put it away for several weeks (maybe longer) and one day I thought I'll try one more time and voila it magically worked. Fixed itself. I was able to sync it to my laptop again as well.

Now about 1 year later it's back again. Same exact problem. If I power off and plug it in it turns itself back on but won't charge. So I have to plug it in first and then power down and let it charge (painfully slowly). We'll see if time will heal this again :\

The only reasons I can think of for this are

A: Your power cable is broken/incompatible with your iPad. Try a different cable.

B: Your battery/logic board have issues. In this case, you have to replace the broken part.

C: You didn't connect the cables right. If you've ever taken apart the iPad before, open it up again and reconnect all the screws and cables.

Hope this helps!

I have the same problem with my iPad Air 1. The get around solution I found for this problem was to power off the device, and while powered off I would connect the cable from ipad charger to the ipad.

You have to power the device off when it restarts. That is needed till minimum 50 percent. So it has enough juice to run while connected to your pc.

At that point after checking if it has enough battery, turn the ipad off again and connect it to your pc.

Now the iPad must automatically turn on and this will allow you to sync.

Every time you remove the charging connector. You must repeat these steps.

Maybe it helps you, or other iPad air 1 users. Good luck.

What I do is connect the charging cable while the iPad is still on, wait for the “This accessory may not be compatible” message (sometimes it doesn’t recognize it, in that case I unplug the cable, turn it around and plug it again until it gives the warning) and then turn the iPad off. It’s a bit annoying but at least I can still charge it and make use of my iPad, it’s my everyday “tool” and source of news. The other day I let the battery run to low (below 5) and I was fearful I wouldn’t be able to charge it again because of this problem, fortunately after a few minutes it did charge, lucky me!

Had an iPad 5th gen do the same thing. Wouldnt charge while powered on, but it would when it was powered off. Also when it was plugged into a windows computer I'd get a message that the USB device was not recognized. So I changed out the charger port and it charges fine now.
