iPhone 5C screen not turning on after water damage and battery replace

So my grandpa dropped his iPhone 5C in some water and I had him turn it off and put in rice for a while.. The first attempt to turn on just got a slightly flickering apple logo and thats it. So I almost completely disassembled it and I tried cleaning it with some 91% iso alcohol. There was only a couple small areas of visible brownish corrosion like near the battery connector although the alcohol didn't seem to really remove it. I also replaced the battery. After this I have not been able to get the screen to come on. The phone itself is on because it makes a sound when plugging in a charger and registers in iTunes. It asks me to respond "trust" on the iPhone in order to access data in iTunes which I can not do without a functional display. It also will register if I put it in recovery mode. But I do not want to restore in recovery mode if possible so I do not lose all the data. Any ideas why the display won't come on? I have tried hard/soft resetting etc. I have tried reconnecting the display flex cables a few times. Is there any way to access the data on the iPhone and get it to backup in iTunes? I feel like I am so close to having it functioning again. Any help would be appreciated!

Update

Everything works except the screen is black. It responds to touch and Siri works! I just can't see anything

Does anyone know which flex cable is for the display and backlight?

sounds like your screen might be dead. thats very common with water damaged devices. Ifixit has them available in their store.

Hmm.. You think so even though it kind of turned on at first? That would be a bummer

It's possible that the display chip has some damage. You'd need to remove the EMI shields and clean the corrosion from there. If that does not work you could try reflowling the graphics chip. You'd need a hot air station ideally although a heat gun would work if you're careful.

Oh okay Im fairly technically fluent but I have no idea what reflowing the graphics chip is

Pretty much, you use hot air to melt the solder joints in the hope that they reflow back in to position. This is usually a last resort if ultrasonic cleaning doesn't work.

yea i looked up reflow.. Makes sense. Would I target the whole logic board or just a specific chip or connector?

If you try a known working screen and it is still black it could be the backlight. There are components on the board responsible for this and when a phone has water damage it can cause them to fail.

You then get the problem you describe where everything works okay but the screen is black.

Do you think there's the potential of killing another display if I hook up a good one?

- de

No you won't damage the display. If it is black like the other one you know it is most probably an issue with the backlight. Then you would just need to locate the faulty component or components and replace them.

Okay I think I will try to find another 5C that will so kindly lend me their screen haha
