Act fast

  • Remove sim card and battery
  • Rinse well under the tap, use running water
  • put it in a hot, dry place. I have used my oven, set it at 50 Celcius, and leave the door open. Leave it there for several hours.

If you are lucky this can save your phone. If not you need to open it up and clean it up. And even then it might not work.

I have done almost exactly what rousp said (the difference is I don't use oven, I used the sun heat because I'm in Jakarta,Indonesia).

And my Nokia 7610 work fine again.

It should in theory work for all the equipment. What one needs to do is to ensure the equipment does not get turned on. I try to remove the battery as well, open the case and use isopropyl alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol is used as a water-drying agent) to clean the PCB due to corrosion issues. If you follow the numerous answers on ifixit.com in regards to immersion you will find plenty of free expert advise about that subject. Good luck

If the phone was on when it got wet I would bet that it no longer works. Drying it out might work for a time but the 'high conducting' salt water was bound to short out and create latent damage in the semiconductors which could take weeks to rear its head. It would also corrode the protective film on the circuit board allowing the copper traces to oxidize and short.

Also, just drying out the unit without an alcohol scrub will let the water evaporate and leave the salt behind.

Nokia makes durable phones but this little fella just might have bought the farm. :(
