Do you see the speakers in the control panel? Right click the little speaker in the corner and select "playback devices" and find them.

Your speaker wires are probably broken. In their infinite stupidity Dell put the speakers in the lid and ran the tiny wires through the right-hand hinge where they're subject to flexing every time the lid is opened or closed. There is very little excess wire to deal with. Go to Dell's website and find the instructions for removing the frame around the screen and you may find enough wire to make a patch. But even your patch will be subject to wear every time the hinge moves.

I happen to like Dell computers! They put a little quality into their products!

@pccheese it is a valid answer and does not warrant a downvote. Careful that you do not use your personal bias to downvote valid answers. Look past the point of what you like or think and judge any answer by its substance. Keep emotions out of it.

@oldturkey03, I'm not a big fanboy of Dell, but I don't like that Felix is insulting a manufacturer so freely.

@pccheese I get it. Issue here is to stay focused and subjective and not get involved in any drama :-) Consider it a poor choice of words and not an insult. companies sometimes do bonehead things and Dell engineers may have slipped. Happens to all of them....:-)

Reboot the computer without the headphone jacks. Sometimes you can reset the power. Remove battery and unplug electric cord, Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Reboot, if that doesn't work - Go to device manager and uninstall sound devices reboot.

The problem started after using external speakers.

Have you (or someone) recently disassembled the laptop? If you did so, maybe the problem is because you forgot to reconnect the speakers wire to the laptop mainboard.
