Installing a SSD in my iMac

Im going to install a SSD our iMac and i've been doing some google and found this: Can I replace iMac's harddrive with an SSD?

I just wanted to ask somethings. First can the SSD be installed in the slot behind the optical drive and still be used as the OS disk? Also is the Inline Digital Thermal sensor absolutely necessary? We are going to buy the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD and installing that. Just want to make sure of these things before we end up buying them. Im also most likley going to follow the tutorial on that page.

Yes, the SSD can be set to be the booting drive with your OS on it. In fact that is the ideal way! in a dual drive configuration. Follow this IFIXIT guide: Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Hard Drive Kit. In your case its a SSD Vs a Hard Disk. It's the same steps!

The inline thermal sensor is only needed if you remove the current hard disk. Just to be clear here I wouldn't do that unless your current drive is suffering. Even still I think you'll prefer a dual drive setup Vs just running the SSD alone.

Now the only issue you do face here is the newest version of OS-X (10.10.x) will not allow 3rd party TRIM services from working currently OS X Yosemite and third-party SSDs: Here's what you need to know. So you will need to review what Samsung offers with their SSD drive or look at a different drive that has cleanup service within the SSD units firmware.

Thanks! We are looking for a dual hard drive setup so it doesn't go to waste. IM not sure I understand what you mean about the TRIM service. Does it mean I must install a software hack to make it work? Also, can the software just be re downloaded using the recovery mode? Rather than "migrating" it. Thanks again

Here's a bit more on TRIM services wikipedia - TRIM. Basically, it does the clean up of freed areas of the SSD.

No, recovery mode won't work here. Go to the App Store and download the OS-X installer so you can install a fresh OS copy onto the SSD.
