What Does a Large Hard Drive Icon at Startup Mean?

Replaced the stock WD 250GB JS drive with a 500GB AAKS. It's been running perfectly for 5 days, then this morning I turned it on (I always shutdown) and first thing I got was a large HD icon in the middle of the gray screen and nothing else happened. I hit the power button to turn it off and turned it back on and it booted normally. What happened, should I expect more HD problems?

Go under the the Apple in the upper left hand corner to System Preferences -> Startup Disk and select your drive. This tells the computer where to look for a startup folder instead of it searching for one.

This happened to me this morning. There was an 'up' arrow under the hard drive icon -- which I clicked and then was taken to what appears to be my normal operating desktop. Except there were other problems. When I attempted to type in Safari (google search, passwords, etc), my writing was always in alternate characters. Checked preferences for Safari, and they were as they should be (english). Shut down and rebooted. Still got the hard drive icon, and still have the jiberish text when typing.

Any more info out there about what the hard drive in the center of the screen is supposed to mean? Is my Mac running in some sort of 'safe' mode?
