Tim, to make proper determination of what is going on with your tub, you would have to disassemble the cabinet. You should find some springs on the top of the drum and couple of shock absorbers on the bottom. There are also some concrete counter weights surrounding the tub. Take a look and see what you find

mine did the same. The hub, attached to the drum in 3 places, to the shaft broke in all 3 places. It would still turn the drum (in slow speed only), at high speed, unit stops because of a serious out of balance condition. The drum has to be replaced - not too big of a deal - just get he unit to an open area and start disassembling. The new drum, Amazon (Whirlpool) cost ~ $280. Still cheaper than a new unit of the same type.

Mine broke after doing a load of blankets and the out of balance sensor didn't stop the cycle to reposition soon enough.

Take heavy item to your local laundramat - their machines are better suited for this.

REMOVING THE WASHER FRONT PANEL

Removing the washer front panel will require that the door switch be removed and the boot be separated completely from the front panel opening.

The console must also be removed.

Next, remove the three screws securing the toe panel to the front of the washer and remove the toe panel by lifting slightly and pulling forward.

Remove the two screws securing the bottom of the front panel to the washer, and the two screws securing the top of the front panel to the washer. The front panel can now be removed from the washer.
