screen backlight not working

I have a MacBook Air 13 mid 2012. The backlight on the screen stopped working. I did a reinstall of the os and during the install the light would flicker at certain points and come on for a bit. But once the install was done the backlight would not come on or even flicker. I reinstalled the os again just to see if the backlight would come on again and it did the same thing, it would come on and flicker at install then stop working once done. Any idea what my issue may be? It sounds software related not hardware. I did a pram and smc resetting no luck.
