Why does my printer insist there is a paper jam?

My printer uses Brother LC 103 ink cartridges. The printer had a paper jam, that I fixed. However, it still shows a jam and won't print (or even scan). I have double and triple checked for tiny bits of paper (none). I have turned it off, unplugged it, restarted it, restarted the computer, etc. But no good. Any suggestions ?

Sounds like the rubber feeder rollers need cleaning. carefully open the carriage and wipe the rollers with some Isopropyl alcohol using a cotton swab.

I'm not sure if cleaning it helped, but after cleaning I manually fed a sheet of coverstock through the rollers before restarting and it finally cleared up.

I cannot get paper jam off. I have check and check there is no paper jam check rollers still not working the copier is not even 1 yr old.

Over time the paper dust can mess up the sensor system. Cleaning it and the rollers often fixes things. If that doesn't you'll need to locate someone with the needed parts to replace them.

I agree Dan. My MFC-J4700W insists on a paper jam although rollers have been cleaned, printer head drive belt has been cleaned, entire unit blown out with air. All paper jam results given by Brother have been followed multiple times.

If I knew the location of the sensors for paper jams, then I could fix this baby. For the money, its been one of the better printers I've owned, especially over HP.

Any ideas where to find the schematic or mechanical drawings to identify sensors?

ever tried "soaking" an area where paper jams are reported or occur to see if the paper dust comes out?

I have similar case.

At beginning, the printer always show "paper jam", when I try print any document, but copy, scan and test print work.

I start to reset all setting, include network WLAN, but seem worse then before, it show "wrong paper size".

So, I tried cleaning all roll and any paper feed, hopefully paper feed can run smoothly.

I tried to reset again, but without WLAN, and gladly notification "wrong paper size" disappear. I try scan, copy, test print, all working.

then, i try to connect the printer via WLAN, but after setup printer netwotk, it shown "wrong paper size".

So, I think the problem is from WLAN, I don't what makes paper jam/ wrong paper size by setup netwok wizard

I hope theres solution for this problem...

It's been 5 years using this printer never happen any trouble

May be you have not cleaned the printer properly. that’s why it keeps displaying the paper jam error. So you need to remove the paper tray, and remove the damage paper.

Now open the backside of the machine and check it there is any paper stucked inside it. If there is anything available. you need to remove it from your printer. now your machine will start working fine. once you make these changes, you will get rid of brother printer paper jam error.

If you have the Brother printer on double sided printing (Duplex) that can cause a so called paper jam. I switched my setting back to single sided and it now works fine again. Colin

Mine was having trouble with the paper tray not being secure enough and it needed pressure from the bottom up. If you put your printer on carpet and it works, you may be having the same problem. I put a small magazine under the paper tray and put both the magazine and the printer on a level, hard surface. This fixed my problem.

1. Remove stuck paper from the tray:

  • Remove all the loose paper from the paper tray.
  • Press the resume button on the printer.
  • Then carefully remove the stuck paper.
  • And look for a small piece of paper and take it out if present.


2. Remove the rear access panel:

  • Look for the access tab on the back side or on the panel of the printer.
  • If it is a knob then move it to unlock direction.
  • Then remove the panel and take out the jammed paper from the printer.
  • Check for any remaining small bit of paper.
  • Replace and secure the rear panel.

(Brother MFC-J4420DW) If the printer has a scanner function, carefully/thoroughly clean the scanner bed glass, with special attention to the narrow area of glass on the left. I use a clean microfiber cloth to get the last bit of dust. That helped in my case.
