Hard drive will not boot

I replaced my hard drive 13 months ago & now it is making clicking noise with white screen and then a file appeared with a ? on it. Does not look good does it? The hard drive is 320 - 7200 - should have lasted longer - right? What are my options

The clicking noise and the folder/? icon is the "best" sign for a defective hdd.

there are not many options to handle that.

i use a external harddrive connector set and try to save as much data as possible from those failing drives - yes - in that case i first try to save the date and after that i try to boot the computer.

boot the from the setup disk and start the disk utility and try to check/repair the volume/permissions

if you don't have the possibility of getting a external usb hdd connector set - or simply have no important data on the drive - you can skip the backup part

good luck

Hard Drives are inherently unreliable. No such things "should have lasted longer" backup backup backup

They aren't that unreliable! There are many factors to why a HDD may fail, and they do fail more often on mobile computers as the HDD is sensitive to motion. Another thing is to buy from a reputable brand, like WD or Seagate.

Still, there's no such thing as estimated life of an HDD.

I agree with that for notebooks but desktop hard drives are much more stable IMHO

Yes, but still unreliable. In fact you can get a whole host of other issues with them just because they are stationary. Such as if it's in a bad environment for an HDD, it doesn't leave that environment/conditions. Or if something is perpetually blocking the fan.

Seagate is great quality.

Seagate and WD, from personal experience, are the best at magnetic storage (HDD). But for NAND flash (SSDs), Corsair, Crucial and Kensington are all excellent.

The only thing reputable about WD drives is that they have a 50% fail rate within the first 6months to 1 year and i am getting this from personal experience and tons of reviews on dif sites. i would recomend a seagate or samsung drive since they are built a little better and the ones i have have outlasted all WD drives i have had.
