Warped or uneven foot?

I just received my new Mac mini and it works great, but theres one thing that is bothering me. The removable foot/ram cover sort of bends when it is in place and makes the mini wobbly, but when i take the foot off, it is flat. My question is could the cover be putting pressure on the fan or something, or could it just be a minor defect because its a new design and still has some bugs.

Thanks in advance.

I would assume that it's just a minor bug in the design like the PowerMac G5's "Warped Feet" where the weight of the computer, or just setting it down would bend the metal feet (Which I believe they fixed in the Mac Pro) or the G4 Cube's cracked enclosure. It shouldn't hurt anything to just take it off, and leave it like that.

I figured it out. since there are only 3 points that hold on the bottom, the front sort of hangs out and the plastic bends up. It would be better if the whole plate was reinforced with metal instead of just half.

I'm not too familiar with these, i have the last-generation Mac mini, and have had one heck of a time using a putty knife to change my RAM and Hard drive, I'm glad they finally made it user-upgradable.

It's a brand new unit, so take it right back and ask for a new one.

that works too, just make sure you kept the recipt!

I ordered it from the website.

For the record, Chris Green said he thought it would be ok to run it without the bottom, it isn't ok to do that because of the way it was designed the bottom plate directs airflow around the hard drive and cd drive.

if there is an apple store near by you can take it there and if they decide to can replace it for free since you wont need a receipt to prove you just got it since it is obviously a just released model and under the 1 year warrenty

These machines are crafted using the highest level of precision in the industry.

It sounds as though one of the three locking points isn't being properly aligned when you close it, or one of them has a faulty construction--and I'd bet on the first being the real problem.

When you close the bottom cover by rotating it into place, the three pins and sockets on the inside of the cover all lock into place. It sounds like one of these has not been seated properly when closing the cover into locked position.

Check carefully that you are closing it properly, and take advantage of your free AppleCare telephone support so they can explain and verify if there is a mechanism problem.

But this is NOT common nor acceptable, because like I said, all the pieces of this machine have been precision designed and manufactured to have absolutely no gaps and perfect fit and finish.

sounds nice - but the quality of apple products isn't that high. they were designed from the outside, then some other designer have to put all the technic stuff in that design and some poor flextronics workers have to assemble it. the quality check in china is most likely done with "warp drive 3" (some devices felt like it). apple products have a great design, but the technic has it's flaws. maybe "we" (the germans) define quality a little bit different - but from my point of view - the new mini is overpriced by almost 100% (the us price for the 2.4ghz model is 699$ - we have to pay 1007$, the 2.66 costs 999$ in the us and we have to pay 1430$ in the german apple store). another thing i can't understand is the fact that many apple devices are "disposable" - they are non repairable produced. surely, with the right amount of force, chemicals and knowledge you can remove the "glue" under the chips of an iPhone/iPod - but it's a shame that a "modern" company produces stuff that isn't ment to be repaired at all.

If I could + your comment, Markus, I would. And I agree.

Certainly not disposable. If that were the case, this site would not exist.

This site was started and lived a long and eventful life being focused only on Apple products, and enabling end-users to do their own repairs.

While I agree fully about the vulnerabilities to quality induced by the factory's conditions and quality control inspections, it is nonetheless true that the engineering tolerances of these machines is a tight as any other computer manufacturer.

Would it be a more tightly assembled product if each one was assembled in Germany? WITHOUT A DOUBT! It must be a cultural thing, as engineering and assembly quality is synonymous with Germany.

But Apple does engineer the manufacturing process themselves, and does an outstanding job.

My point was actually based on the fact that the unibody aluminum shell that houses this machine is crafted from a single piece of aluminum by using a CNC lathe--not moulding or such--and therefore each pieces is more or less identical. The quality problem with a warped cover would be the result of the plastic cap being distorted or improperly seated at some point, and if it spent enough time in that position the plastic would be very difficult to return to its proper form.

By the way, if this machine WERE assembled in Germany, the price would increase by at least 50-75%!!

I found an unboxing video on youtube and i asked the poster if he had the same problem and he said he did so i think a replacement would do the same thing. I think it is a design flaw.
