The screen distorts and goes into wild colors and when I restart its ok for a little while then it happens again. One time when it happened awindow came up and asked me to restart the computer.

I have an old iBook that does the same thing. the black screen I know is a bad GPU. (Ive actually asked a similar question on here.) So when I start it up, I push down on the left of the touchpad, and that keeps it from going black. Don't know if that applies to iMac or not though. But it could never hurt to try.

Oh, sorry I was thinking the iMac was a laptop, guess I didnt help much there. Sorry!

We need to know which iMac you have. Look on the bottom of the stand.
